Evolving Language Expr. Expr. (Current Turns: Torco, Chibi)
Evolving Language Expr. Expr. (Current Turns: Torco, Chibi)
As I talked about in this this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=40305 , and Brandrinn tried out in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=40309 , I'm going to run an experiment. So, I need volunteers!
You'll receive two presentation files. One titled "Training", and the other "Naming". Naturally, what you'll have to do is divided into 2 parts.:
1) First, you'll look at the training presentation (colloquially know as "powerpoints"). It will show you in sequence 14 (or 13) slides, each with an image and its corresponding name. Each slide will be shown for 15 seconds. View the presentation at most *twice*, do *not* pause it. Try to remember the name of each image as well as possible. Don't feel bad if you feel overwhelmed.
2) Second, you'll look at the naming presentation. It will show you in sequence 27 slides, each with an image, but this time without its name. Each slide will be shown for 15 seconds. Your job is to name the images (in sequence). (I suggest having a piece of paper or document editor open while watching the presentation, so that you may name the images as they come.) Naturally, some names will be simply remembered, some forgotten, and some completely unknown. For the latter two categories, give a name that you think that the language would use. Do *not* go back and look at the names from part one. Name the images in sequence, and do *not* go back to rename old images. After you're done naming the images, send me the list of names (in order!) via private message.
3) Wait for the experiment to be completed. After all the people in the chains have completed the experiment, the results will be posted. Thank you for your participation!
Note: Although this experiment is larger than Brandrinn's, your participation in it should not take longer than 15 minutes, if you follow the time limits faithfully. Feel free to ask questions.

Team Alpha:
1) Gulliver
2) Chibi (current)
Team Beta:
1) tubragg
2) Torco (current???)
To be Drafted:
- installer_swan
- Lyra
- sucaeyl
- Fmra
- Zju
- Milloniare
- Emma

Edit: I've decided to use presentations instead of folders. That way it's easier for me to control the timing, and it's easier for the participant to view the images!
Edit Edit: I've tried out the first round, myself, and it's tough. Don't feel bad if you feel that you did terrible. Because of this, I increased the time that each slide is displayed to 15 seconds (from 10). This will make each round take longer, of course.

Thanks! I'll send you the stuff later today, after I get home.I'll be glad to join.
Nah. Everybody's read the thread and stuff already anyways.Am I ineligible?

sure, why not, count me in

1) I've decided to use presentations instead of folders. Everybody can open and view powerpoints, right? (Using Google Docs would actually be easier, if anybody uses that.)
2) I may not do so if not enough people join, but I'd like to start two separate chains. Each chain will begin with the same language, but then they'll (probably) diverge. It will be fun to compare them at the end.
3) I'm not sure if I should talk about the phonology of the language or not. I don't mind if the phonology evolves, but I don't want to receive something crazy like: [XR\K=?8:F}].
4) People from Brandrinn's experiment are welcome!

This sounds fun, and now that I'm basically done with everything school-wise, I can actually commit to stuff. So sign me up!

I'd like to do this.
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
I'd like to try this. =)
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
I'd also like to participate. Sounds like tons of fun.
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
Okay, so by "tonight", I meant two days later. I'm too tired to make the presentations at the moment, but I'll make them tomorrow. Thank you to all the volunteers!

Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
Me too, please.
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
It is not. Depending on how many people join, I may start a third chain. Currently, there's 12 people, so that's 6 people per chain. Is it too late to sign up?
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
The experiment has begun! Both Gulliver and tubragg should have my PM in their inbox. Let me know if something went terribly wrong! (Like if my website is down.)
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
I have received the files and will do the experiment tomorrow.
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
Done it! I've PMed you (Terra), as well as a few comments.
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
Done and sent.
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
Received!
The next participants will receive the materials shortly.
Also, I've decided that people can view each presentation twice now. Please keep that in mind.

Edit: *sigh*, I only noticed now that I prepared the wrong slides, and it's getting late, so I'll have to send them tomorrow. Sorry Brandrinn and Torco.

Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
What happened with this?
Re: Evolving Language Experiment Experiment [Need Volunteers
1) I prepared the wrong slides.Zju wrote:What happened with this?
2) Then I got side-tracked.
3) Then I got homework.
4) Then I got a job.
5) Then I got sidetracked again.
6) I also got tired in between all of those.
Tomorrow, the experiment will continue. Indeed, as Brandrinn warned, I wish there was some *easy* way to automate this...
