Also this has already been said and I really don't see why you feel the need to revive a stupid months-old discussion on English plurals especially if you have nothing to add.

yea, Inversion is right, not -us, (-ous at most), see:
ὀκτώπους (oktōpous) m, ὀκτώπους f, ὀκτώπουν n; third declension; (oktōpous)

I was referring to <-us> not /-us/, as I prefer to use <y> not <u> for /y/.Thry wrote:yea, Inversion is right, not -us, (-ous at most), see:ὀκτώπους (oktōpous) m, ὀκτώπους f, ὀκτώπουν n; third declension; (oktōpous)

Well of course you weren't, -/us/ didn't even exist back then*. The point being; -υς doesn't pluralize -οδες; -ους pluralizes -οδες; because it's a digraph for a different sound entirely so referring to a written form -υς just doesn't make sense, however you pronounce or picture it.
*back then meaning w/e stage in which you're referring to /y/.
Here, Inversion, let's watch the world burn: oktwpoys ftw

More precisely, the form is a result of cluster simplification in which the sequence /-ods/ was reduced to /-o:s/. The stem is underlyingly {oktopod-} in all forms. You see, it makes perfect sense.
Also zontas I don't know what the hell you are driveling about but I advise you do not do so any further.

No, every single thread on this forum has the Pointless and Annoyingly Pedantic Debate Thread as an assumed subtitle.linguoboy wrote:People, the subject line says, "Quote Thread". I'm pretty sure the Pointless and Annoying Pedantic Debate Thread has always been in Ephemera.

If we're expected to post quotes of the calliber of your last contribution, we might as well talk about something else indeed.linguoboy wrote:People, the subject line says, "Quote Thread". I'm pretty sure the Pointless and Annoying Pedantic Debate Thread has always been in Ephemera.

Re: The Official ZBB Quote Thread
I blame Zontas for starting this exchange, for not adding anything new on top of that, and for not knowing that word-final <-ους> is usually transcribed <-ous> and not <-us> on top of that (even though yes, <ου> is otherwise commonly rendered as <u> as in "Thucydides" and "Plutarch"--however, word-final <-us> implies <-ος> due to the common Latinization of Greek name endings). Shame on him.
I blame Inversion for not noticing this and saying "it did not have -us" when Zontas meant <-ους> and not <-ος>. Shame on him.
I blame Thry for further confusing matters saying Zontas meant <-υς> when he said <-us>. Shame on him.
I blame ObsequiousNewt for... actually, I don't see anything he should feel ashamed for. Good for him.

I'm sure you can come up with something better. Re: The Official ZBB Quote Thread
I reject the shame on me, because in either case zontas insinuated that it was some kind of paradigm ending you could expect the d from, which it isn't, also he generally abused terminology in that post so voilà le méchant.

Re: Octopuke
THE VOCATIVE OF A LATIN OCTOPUS, OCTOPI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
except with a curious suffix -uk-. Whatever origin could it have?

Re: Octopuke
Speaking of biology terms... biologists love coining nouns ending in -ιον, but obnoxiously only mitochondrion is pluralized as "mitochondria". Google knows nothing of "viria", only pages and pages of "virions". It seems "virus" is forever doomed to be badly pluralized, no matter the form.
Re: Octopuke
Well, virus is already Latin and has no plural form (it means "poison"), and if it had one, it'd be vira (Greek has "iós").
Viria???? How about virionta? virion just has the Greek suffix -on "particle", as in "ion", added to a Latin root, so... "virions" is fine.
The real evil here is embryones.

Re: Octopuke
...who uses that? Spanish-language instances aren't allowed.
Re: Octopuke
Well in Spanish we do say virión so that points to the -on not being the 2nd declension neuter.
Oh, you mean the embriones thing. Idk, I didn't specify if it was a real or potential danger. Upon a quick google search, c. 10k ppl, though some may be already dead, take a look at the corrupt medieval Church:
