I loved those books as a kid! Hah, nostalgia. I may re-read one sometime.

Yes! They were so much more exciting than those stupid books other children read.

From penises to child books, as in real life. Now you mention the third step and the circle is closed.

That would not be possible here, for it would involve the use of an actual vagina.

Mandarin also has 鸡鸡 (jī jī, little chicken), but the most interesting standard colloquial term I've heard is 小弟弟 (xiao3 dìdì, little brother)

(Sorry for the mismatched pinyin in the second example, I'm on my phone with a limited set of diacritics)

(Another fun one is the slang for masturbation: 打飞机 da3 fēijī, hit the airplane)

I think it's questionable if kalu (thing; tool) is the most common word for cock in Finnish. I think muna (egg), kyrpä (?) and kulli (?) are more common. And what's this "kuk(k)" in Swedish? It's just kuk.

They also mistook Latvia for Lithuania and the other way round.

Well, and polla for the Catalan Countries. Although it may be the most widely used-and-heared word, especially in urban metropolitan areas since it's a loanword from Castilian, I think that carall, pardal and cigala, in the case of Catalonia, are far more popular and even hegemonical in certain areas. In Mallorca pardal, it seems, is the most popular form together with piula, etc.

The truth is that there are so many colloquial names for the penis in the regional and local dialectal levels that is hard to say that polla is the most used form. You can still hear many carall, tita, titola, vit, bitxo, pal, cigala, pixa, pardal, nano, aixeta, fusell... and other words I never heard.

In my area it depends on the generation. The two most common, afaik, are verga (yard, mast, as from a ship) and polla.

Well, Swedish slang masturbate is "runka" which used to mean "to shake" but has shifted meaning so much that it's just funny to read old books where suddenly whole houses, everything, is described as masturbating until you realize that, "oh!" the author meant shaking.

This use of "ejaculate" was common even just 120 years ago; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used it often in Sherlock Holmes iirc.

What's the timeline on "runka"?

Rowling used it in Harry Potter a couple of times, which is jarring.

Pirola looks like the word for lollipop.

I think officially the Catholic church uses "ejaculate" for a one-line response to a prayer. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ejaculation_%28grammar%29 .

Dutch penis slang:

lul (lullen is also a slang word for 'to talk' (usually about nothing/bullshit))
pik
piemel
jongeheer ('young gentleman')
fluit (flute)
lid (member)
leuter (leuteren is also a slang word for 'to chat about nothing')
paal (pole)
plasser(tje) ("pee-er")
stijve ('stiff', only applies to erect penis)
tampeloeres
piemelores
swaffelen: to hit something with your non-erect penis. was an internet rage a couple years back, when someone 'swaffelde' the Taj Mahal in India.

anyone any additions? a quick search online finds way more, but they are all obscure or I don't know them, such as potlood (pencil), sannie (?), sergeant-majoor ( :-D ), snikkel, rampetamp, etc. etc.

Piemel, fluit and plassertje are the ones also used when talking to children, they are the 'cutest' ones. And of course anything gets cute if you turn it into a diminutive: piemeltje, plassertje...'fluitje' is not possible as a fluitje is a certain kind of beer glass and, obviously , a little fluit

Perhaps there's enough water under the bridge now that we can reopen the issue of subcultural variation.

"Dick" was by far the preferred word in my adolescent milieu. You could say "cock" was a literary variant, a word I didn't really start coming across it until I began consuming pornography. Many years later, after I'd come out as gay, someone told me that cock was "our word" and that dick was a "straight word". I don't agree; I have fond memories of being at a pool party with a bunch of gay bears and hearing repeated chants of "SHOW US YOUR DICK!" before they'd depants someone. Most of the variation seems purely collocational to me, e.g. you "suck dick" but you "smoke cock".

My main exposure to German gay slang is through the works of Ralf König. In his Buch zum Film Kondom des Grauens (screened in the USA under the title The Killer Condom), he makes a big deal of the fact that heterosexual lead actor Udo Samel had to devote considerable practice to saying "Dödel" before it rolled off his tongue, which seems to imply that Dödel is a term used chiefly or exclusively by gay men. Duden simply labels it "norddeutsch umgangssprachlich" without delving further into the boundaries of its usage.

There's "smoke pole" too :)

Relatively recent slang. (At least, it's a usage I first encountred less than fifteen years ago.)

Perhaps in some dialects. Sounds a bit British to me. (I don't recall hearing BE speakers use dick to mean anything other than "idiot".)

We definitely use both... But dick sounds more like fetishy and rude and dirty (and straightguyish) to me. Cock sounds more like normal healthy sexy sex.
