Some of you have probably seen this before, but here is a map of the most common slang words for penis in various majority languages in Europe, by category. I look forward to seeing how many mistakes they made!

It is indeed interesting, my L1 uses the fowl analogy thing and I hadn't ever realized that was the reason!

Chjichju is on the map for Corsica but it doesn't offer any explanation. what's the origin of that one?

Are you a one-trick pony? Because that's how you come across.

Duh, it's not like he made the thread. Also, how seriously can you argue a 10k post person is monothematic?

What about "dick"? It's arguably more common than "cock", although less vulgar.

As a side note, don't forget Catalan cigala "cicada" and carall "stick", as well as tita "young hen" and titola.

Cock's more common in the UK (in every sense of the word...)

I could be wrong, but to me it 'feels' as though 'dick' is the older, and more upper-class, word while 'cock' is newer and more working-class (although of course I'm aware that 'cock' has actually been around since Shakespeare, and probably longer).
There's also, for me, a register difference, with 'dick' sounding more childish - one the one hand, it's harder to say with a straight face, and on the other hand it's easier to get away with saying, it comes across as less obscene. Iirc there was sort of a graduation in terminology with increasing age, from 'willy' through 'dick' to 'cock'. I wonder if that and my first sentiment are coincidental, or whether it's a case of (linguistically) ontogeny recapitulating the phylogeny?

Come and find out!

Well, I am. But for good reasons. Penises are quite important, you know.

Yep. That's how that works.

No, you don't.

I was just thinking you might not realize that's what you're projecting. If you don't give a shit, it's not for me to try and force you to.

Question: isn't the English word related to the word for a spigot, e.g. a stopcock rather than the word for a rooster?

cock has been around since old english.

I kinda feel like this is arbitrary, though, because I can think of several other words for penis off the top of my head, although they vary in vulgarity.

The map should be called "What Astraios looks for when he visits each linguistic area of Europe".

Same thought here myself. The first one other than cock and dick I thought of was member, but there's others still.

but what is the etymology of 'wang'

wiktionary says it might be from the same root as 'thong', which, lol

Yeah, member, tool, pisser each fit into one of the other categories.

There's also dick, wang, willy, schlong, dong, wiener, penis, one-eyed monster, trouser snake, etc

I'm not entirely convinced it makes sense to classify French 'bite' under 'things that pierce'.

The etymology is apparently unclear: I always thought it was from 'bitte', bollard - but apparently there's not enough evidence; it could also be a derivation of Old French 'abitter', 'touch, approach' or possibly 'plug'. (the funny thing is that it would be cognate to English 'bite' then.)

I'm not too sure about Italian cazzo either, which I think derives from a diminutive of caput. (On the other hand, my Italian is shaky, so maybe it did mean 'handle' at some point?)

apart from being wrong about Xephyr's thematicity there really is no excuse to go around incessantly broadcasting

HELLO I LIKE PENIS

-- and that twenty-four/seven. The accusation, in case this hasn't sunken in yet, that somebody 'doesn't ever talk about anything other than [X]' is not meant entirely literally. But since apparently that's what's trending let me rephrase:

You're a bunch of crudes and everybody got that you like sex a lot after the first ten times.

Oh shut the fuck up. If it comes to that, straight people are like that all the time. They get to announce loudly and bluntly that they're a fan of tits without people telling them off for it. That's not to say that it's not crude, nor that Astraios isn't: they both are. But let him be, or at least tell him off without being a homophobic asswipe.
