Guess the Language, anyone?
Re: Guess the Language, anyone?
Not Yugur.
Re: Guess the Language, anyone?
Wait why did Gach win that last round? Kalmyk is Oirat.

Re: Guess the Language, anyone?
Don't know, I take it as Nort's judgement. However, Kalmyk does exist as its own standard and is conventionally regarded as a "language". But maybe there is a need for explicit rules for how to deal with dialect continua and multiple literary standards.

Meh, doesn't matter.

Re: Guess the Language, anyone?
I wouldn't have given it to someone who guessed Mongolian, and if I posted Japhug rGyalrong I wouldn't give it to someone who just guessed "rGyalrong". Kalmyk has its own standard and its own Wikipedia, so I figure it's its own language.
Probably best to avoid ambiguous cases like that in the future. Which probably means not posting any Mongolic languages. Oh well.

Re: Guess the Language, anyone?
Mongolic does have its problems. I would have had some good examples from Chakhar Mongolian but I don't think people would feel happy going after specific dialects. Plus, the material is produced by a native speaker of said idiom but instead of adapting any practical standard uses a wholly linguistically motivated special orthography.

Is it spoken in China? Does ts and tss stand for palatal or postalveolar fricatives? Probably Wutun.
If not, then Quechua or Aymara?

Re: Guess the Language, anyone?
It does not look Andean because of the voiced fricatives, however there are some languages that do have voiced fricatives. It's not a language of the barbacoan family, so then it can be Yanesha.ObsequiousNewt wrote:Sorry if this ends up being too easy or too hard... But it's probably not at all in South America and I don't know too much about non-south-american languages.

Is it Cofán?
I did have a bizarrely similar (to the original poster's) accident about four years ago, in which I slipped over a cookie and somehow twisted my ankle so far that it broke

I've done enough of these that y'all should know the extra rules I put into effect - one guess at a time, languages guesses only until 24 hours have passed.

Is it from Africa?
I generally forget to say, so if it's relevant and I don't mention it--I'm from Southern Michigan and speak Inland North American English. Yes, I have the Northern Cities Vowel Shift; no, I don't have the cot-caught merger; and it is called pop.

Oh damnit ! That's in an area that I am interested in, if you would have taken Páez or a Barbacoan language I might have guessed it.ObsequiousNewt wrote:It is Cofán.Nesescosac wrote:Is it Cofán?
As for the next language, I guess of the austronesian family.
