Looking for a couple Breton and Gallo names

Post by Zaarin »

Does anyone here know the Old Breton and Gallo forms of the names Élodie and Melisende?

What ship would bear me ever back across so wide a Sea?”

Melisende might be easy to suss out from Proto-Celtic roots(?), but unfortunately I don't think I have any resources on Gallo or Romance languages especially North French languages. And I have none on Breton specifically.

Actually, looking up Melisende, it seems to be connected to Amalasuintha, which seems to be an Ostrogothic name... I'm not sure if they are really connected or not.

And in addition, Élodie might come from Visigothic roots... But I never know whether to believe the name etymology sites without digging deeper into actual etymological dictionaries.

Yeah, poking around name sites hasn't been very helpful for me either, other than finding that Melisende was a fairly popular name in Medieval France, which I already knew. :(
