I say "in the spring", "in the summer", "in the fall", and "in the winter" but would never say *"in the autumn". That would be "in autumn".

I don't use 'the' for any of them, although 'in the spring' and 'in the fall' groks better than the rest of them.

I never say "the" for any of them, except for summer: it only happens in spring, it only happens in the summer, it only happens in autumn...

The word "autumn" is relatively uncommon here. "Fall" is used a lot more. May explain why it doesn't take "the".

For whatever reason, my first impression is that I would say "in winter" but "in the summer, in the spring, in the fall". I don't really use autumn, but if I did, I feel like I would say "in the autumn". It probably depends some on context though.

I could use "the" or not, also I use autumn and fall about evenly; It depends on what affect I'm going for. Using "the" feels more formal and so does using "autumn" instead of "fall".
