I think it's contextual. Calling a woman a "girl" can be patronizing or it can be endearing. Less talked about is that the same is true of calling a man a "boy." It depends on whether the person being called such is okay with it and whether the person doing the calling intends it to be endearing or demeaning. Also I'm under the impression that some women like a strong man who they feel takes charge in a relationship; I am not for such a woman nor is such a woman for me, but nevertheless they exist.
