I'm currently rethinking the geography of my conworld. I'm going for a much vaguer resemblance to our world this time. My current plan is to work off of a rough diagram of where the continents are, like so:
So, how would I avoid making the geography look exactly like Earth's, as well as ensuring it all comes from the same supercontinent? Thanks.
I honestly can't tell if you're aware that that's a mirror image of Earth? Please advise.
While that approach guarantees that your map won't look exactly like the Earth (because everything will be on the opposite side!), I think it still might not be the best way to avoid resemblance to Earth.
If that really is the basic layout you want to follow, i.e. if what you are going for is a rough mirror image of Earth...well, there are almost infinity ways to draw those coast squiggles. Earth's continents all have these random, idiosyncratic shapes, and you're asking how to avoid reproducing them exactly? Just...draw something different. Use your imagination!
Reminds me of an upside-down version of Turnovia. Since, IIRC, the basic directions of wind and ocean current is northern and southern is symmetrical, turn Turnovia upside down so that's it's a mirrored Earth, the basic results would have been the same assuming the creator had followed the same principles.
You can tell the same lie a thousand times,
But it never gets any more true,
So close your eyes once more and once more believe
That they all still believe in you.
Just one time.
@cromulant: I am aware, yes. And it is what I'm going for.
The idea behind my "viewpoint" conculture is basically "take a Medieval European Fantasy land and have it evolve into a modern-day type of land." Of course, there will be plenty of decidedly non-Western cultures in this world. But for the medieval European fantasy thing to work the way I wanted, I felt like I needed a land with a geography much like Europe's, and neighbors along the same lines. It kind of snowballed from there.
I think I have an idea of how I want to do the map. The idea is to put this beta-map into gplates, create blobs with it, put them all up next to each other, distort said blobs until they look good as continents, then split them up again. That should get me some usable continents.
On a side note, the map has turned out to be surprisingly difficult to create. I never thought I'd need to revise it. I really hope I don't have to keep revising this.
