I'se so silly to be flowing but I no canna stay!

Is it common to leave out the genitive 's in headlines?Salmoneus wrote:Confusing BBC Headline of the Day:

Re: Cheese that smells
Not uncommon, but I was also struggling at first to read '326' as a noun ('pietersen 326? how many pietersens are there!?'), and I was initially trying to read 'England' as the first element in a compound, rather than as a recipient in its own right.jal wrote:Is it common to leave out the genitive 's in headlines?Salmoneus wrote:Confusing BBC Headline of the Day:

I still don't know what Pietersen 326 is. I do understand, though, that England is the recipient of the message here.Salmoneus wrote:Confusing BBC Headline of the Day:

That's because you lack the natural curiosity that has advanced human kind. Blame it on your upbringing ;).sirdanilot wrote:I still don't know what Pietersen 326 is. I do understand, though, that England is the recipient of the message here.

Oh for... do we need to ban both of you guys? Because that's going to happen if you don't grow up. And no, "he staaaarted iiiiit!" is not an adequate excuse.

I'm so used to "slut shame" as a verbal compound that it never occurred to me this would have a different interpretation for some speakers.

I'd almost fall of my chair, but I'd have to agree with sirdanilot here. Mild gests should be allowed, no?sirdanilot wrote:oh cmon it's a joke

Re: Cheese that smells
It's not a "mild jest" when you target the same person in five different threads at the same time. It's bullying.

Mmmm, I doubt whether it's "five different threads", but I'll contain my effort to the E thread from now on.Salmoneus wrote:It's not a "mild jest" when you target the same person in five different threads at the same time. It's bullying.

Re: Cheese that smells
Well ideally you could stop being pointlessly unpleasant in every thread, but I guess I may have to take what I can get.

Well, I call bullshit on that (I don't think I've been "pointlessly unpleasant" in the "Help your (conlang) fluency" threads, for example), but hey, whatever. I'll behave.Salmoneus wrote:Well ideally you could stop being pointlessly unpleasant in every thread, but I guess I may have to take what I can get.

By some minor miracle, we seemed to have circled back on topic.jal wrote:Well, I call bullshit on that (I don't think I've been "pointlessly unpleasant" in the "Help your (conlang) fluency" threads, for example), but hey, whatever. I also originally read Sal's statement as: "You are pointlessly unpleasant in every thread. Ideally you could stop this." But upon rereading I realised the actual thrust was, "Rather than restricting your pointless unpleasantness to a single thread, ideally you could put an end to it everywhere."

Re: Cheese that smells
The reason that I replied with a joke was that he does that thing you call 'bullying' (I wouldn't seriously call it that as it puts me in the position of 'whiner', and I am not a whiner) in almost every thread where we encounter each other, so instead of reacting to it seriously I simply posted a joke.

Feel free to think that. It will probably, however, result in being banned.

What rule am I breaking then? I am following moderator guideliens in that I no longer post in the venting thread. I tried to combine my vents in my own personal thread, but this was removed. So what else can I possibly do?Salmoneus wrote:Feel free to think that. It will probably, however, result in being banned.
You are not giving me many options here. You are victimizing and bullying me. I find it appaling behaviour for a moderator. You are essentially punishing me for following your rules.
Re: Cheese that smells
Do what I instructed you to do in the PM I sent you: vent somewhere else. And that is where this conversation should be taking place, not in whichever thread you decide to spam next. All that will result in is being banned from those threads as well (and, ultimately, this Board), as you now are from this one. What on earth makes you think that a guerrilla war against the mods is something you can win?sirdanilot wrote:What rule am I breaking then? ETA: sirdanilot, I just sent you another PM which should answer your questions (although not with what you wanted to hear). Read it and, if you feel you need to respond, do it by PM. And further posts by you to this thread will be deleted.

Re: Cheese that smells
I guess sloppy editing. Too long "House that (...) Mr Darcy lived in / owned is on sale (...)" changed to "House of (...) Mr Darcy is on sale", but somehow only the latter was changed.linguoboy wrote:House that Jane Austen hero Mr Darcy is on sale for £8million (Daily Mail, online preview only)
