True, but I understood that problem was solved, at least temporarily.
Plus, finding a car I can drive can be a bit tricky...
You have special requirements?

Automatic transmission. (I don't feel comfortable at all with a manual.)

Probably; haven't read the oozepaper today, so I'd imagine they came up with some solution, but at least the strike calendar I'm seeing presently indicates a refinery strike scheduled for the next month, which is why I was thinking that could be an issue.

Oh, ok, I thought you had some weird handicap or something :). Automatic transmission shouldn't be a problem at all, nowadays, I think?

It's normally a bit more expensive and the availability's a bit more reduced, at least from what I saw with the car rental places here in Luxembourg.

Bloody hell, has it been that long? I was just thinking, "oh, I haven't seen him around in a while!", but I hadn't realised the while was so protracted... welcome back, anyway.
yep, it's been quite the hiatus. between preparing for then taking care of a young child and writing papers and now a dissertation, i've been ridiculously busy. i still conlang on occasion, but mostly i'm working on natlangs. i decided to come back on a whim to see how things are going, and i might stay a bit before dissertation and young child (who happens to be wonderfully cute and smart and funny and strong-willed) drag me back into the real world.

Good grief! Is there an industry in Europe that isn't currently undergoing strikes?

I generally forget to say, so if it's relevant and I don't mention it--I'm from Southern Michigan and speak Inland North American English. Yes, I have the Northern Cities Vowel Shift; no, I don't have the cot-caught merger; and it is called pop.

"Europe" is not a monolythic entity.

Oh, no no no, you've misunderstood entirely! That was intended as a joke, actually, in which I commented on the surprising number of strikes mentioned recently in this thread in what was intended to be a humorously over-the-top manner. The joke was that I turned "trains and oil refineries" into "all industries" and "Belgium and France" into "Europe", you see, both of which are ludicrous over-generalizations. It's the disconnect between reality and the exaggerated generalization that's intended to amuse.

I deeply apologize for not making the joke clearer, and will strive to do better at indicating my humorous intent in the future. Perhaps a small winking face such as  will help clarify such posts?

It's all good, Kode.

So our passports now have something that's probably pretty rare in them. We were stamped out of Schengen only to be stamped back into Schengen a few hours later. We were on our flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, all ready for take off when the pilot comes on and says the plane has engine failure. Everyone is forced off and we had to go to the transfer desk. 300 people at the transfer desk is a nightmare, it'd take hours upon hours of waiting. Fortunately for us the airport employee thought we had priority and we didn't say anything so we got in ahead of most people. Unfortunately we can't fly out until tomorrow morning so we're stuck in the Netherlands. Delta put us up at a nice hotel though, with free dinner and breakfast. If only my swimsuit weren't at the airport haha. What a day!

That sounds like a "fun" adventure; I'm surprised they did that rather than get you onto a different routing, like what happened when I went to South Korea. Though I do also have something a bit similar in my old passport: a pair of Iceland passport stamps for entry and exit the same day. This was when I went from the US to the UK via Keflavík, but, despite it being a non-Schengen to non-Schengen itinerary, I still had to clear immigration and customs in Iceland for some bizarre reason.

(And then, on the return, I went via Iceland again... but, because there was literally nothing in the transit area, I had to officially enter Iceland to get a snack. So another set of Iceland entry and exit stamps on the same day.)

In minor venting, it's really quite wet outside today. And I don't have a rain coat or an umbrella... oops.

Your Iceland thing sounds really interesting. It's funny that you had to enter the country to eat!

We exhausted all options to Detroit, I tried every route possible with the woman but everything was booked or there were no connecting flights in the US or it was too short notice for our baggage to be delivered to the plane. I imagine they put 300+ people up in hotels and if our room is any sign (it's basically a suite with free very nice dinner), that had to cost a pretty penny. Apparently Delta's cancellation percentage is very low, .3% of all flights in a given year, and transatlantic cancellations have to be even rarer given the shear cost and hassle. My husband was unfortunately randomly selected for enhanced screening tomorrow so he's freaking a bit out about what all that means.

The only sucky thing is, and it's a real first world problem, we upgraded to more comfy seats originally and now we're squashed in with the rest of the cattle (honestly the comfy "upgrade" is what should be the minimum) but they're refunding the upgrade which is good.

Is it wrong of me to be pissed off at shanoxilt necro'ing a bunch of threads both on here and on the CBB? Because it's certainly pissing me off.

IMNSHO, mass necroing should be worthy of banning without warning.

Posting should be judged more on its content than its date. Certainly, banning without warning, if at all reasonable, is only so for extreme assholes.

I agree. If someone has something pertinent to say, I don't care how dead the thread was. And while Shanoxilt's postings in the necro threads are maybe not very nutritious content - wise, I also don't see them as a crime worth banning him for.

Yeah, I mean, we really don't need legions of the undead suddenly cropping up in zomp's backyard barbeque.

To change conversation, but still on-topic (not like I always do that):
I react badly to AC; I often get a cold when I'm sourrounded by AC for an extended period of time.
At least, when there was the hottest summer on record in December, January and February, it made sense to put the AC on. Now, when we're in winter, it's time to cool it with the AC, not put it up!

On the other hand, I'm not sure how I'll survive when chilling in my Caledonian homeland.

The only time I use AC is in the car; at home I never turn on the AC, no matter how hot it is (since I much prefer warmth over the cold, and indeed hate businesses which have the AC cranked up as they are wont to do). The only reason why I use AC at all is because cars have a tendency to get fiercely hot out in the sun.
