Things seemed like they had actually gotten better - not completely, but quite noticeably still, e.g. largely stopped ideating, stopped feeling hopeless, started eating relatively normally, regained the affect of a normal person, etc. - but what goes up must come down, it seems, and I am back to being quite depressed. Yay. I was really hoping it would last.

Well, at least you know it can go up. Any specific reason you're depressed again? Or is it just whatever makes you have this condition in the first place (i.e. annoying brain)?Travis B. wrote:Things seemed like they had actually gotten better - not completely, but quite noticeably still, e.g. largely stopped ideating, stopped feeling hopeless, started eating relatively normally, regained the affect of a normal person, etc. - but what goes up must come down, it seems, and I am back to being quite depressed. I cannot identify any reason why later yesterday would be markedly different from the day before, so I would put it down to just annoying brain at this point.jal wrote:Well, at least you know it can go up. Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
My laptop was being held together by gorilla tape. The frame started falling apart but I was too poor to buy a new computer. That poor thing, also very heavy, had to come with me everyday to school. Today it finally broke beyond repair. Technically it's only the frame around the power button but I think it cut a wire too. Thankfully, anticipating this I bought a cloud that automatically updated every night so my papers I was writing and documents are safe.
But now I do have to buy a new laptop and we have no money and already tons of bills. So it's just another thing that goes on the credit card....My husbands iPhone broke this week too. The home button stopped functioning. Apparently we have no luck with buttons.
I can say at least that when I bought the computer in 2012 it was used and dated to 2008 and my previous laptop, of the same model a Dell studio, succumbed to the same fate actually. So I suppose I can't complain too much. I just hope a new computer, especially with Windows 10 (I had 7), can meet my standards of speed and ease of use.

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
That's a pretty common problem. If he wants to hold off purchasing a new one, there are apps out there that give you an on-screen home button that does the same thing. You can move it around the screen if it gets in the way. Hardly ideal, but it works well as far as I can tell (I've never had an iPhone, so I don't know first hand).Viktor77 wrote:.My husbands iPhone broke this week too. My phone is also on its way out. I replaced the battery a year ago (which is not as easy as it used to be on older smartphones, as it was glued in there, and it had wiring going over it), and I recently ordered a new charging port and a chip that does something with the screen, because the screen had started acting up. That chip was only $5 (it came from Laos, of all places), so that's not too big of a deal, but recently my proximity sensor stopped working, too, which is mounted to the motherboard. I'm definitely not replacing the motherboard. It's really annoying though, because the screen stays black when I'm in a call, as it can't tell that it's no longer close to my face. I can't call companies (and use a menu) unless I plug in headphones, and I always have to ask people to hang up.
And then, a few weeks ago, my husband stumbled and planted his hand on the desk to catch himself. Unfortunately, my phone was in the way, so now the top third of the screen is cracked
Like you, I have no money whatsoever, because I'm in school, and for personal expenses I'm still living on my last pay checks (last time I worked was a year ago). I mean, my husband pays the rent and food and stuff, so I'll just have to tough it out. It still works. We're getting a tax return in November, so maybe then will be a good time

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
I somehow am glad I don't own a smartphone. (I use a dumbphone for normal phone usage and for Internet usage in public places with WiFi I use a relatively cheap tablet. Typing on the tablet is hard enough as it is, so I cannot imagine typing on an even smaller phone. I have considered getting a laptop (aside from my work laptop), but they are bulkier than my tablet, and I have not really encountered a case where I needed a laptop except at work.)

Travis, I couldn't live without a laptop. In fact I'd take a laptop over a smartphone any day. I'm on my laptop all the time, it's attached to me at the hip.
He's beginning to work now so I'll let him buy that new iPhone he desperately wants. Thankfully one of my former professors contacted me and offered me her old laptop for free. I couldn't believe it! It's 5 years old but in complete working order and on top of that my university gives us free downloads of Microsoft Office so I am thrilled! It should be on its way soon. So things are looking up somewhat. I also just got offered a GA working for the EU center on campus to code one of my professor's books in HTML. I know nothing about HTML but it pays well and I will be trained so I feel like this is an excellent opportunity and it will help us out financially, too.
Yea, he downloaded the button app and has it but he won't be content with it for long, I just know that.din wrote:That's a pretty common problem. Yeah, I didn't think he'd be satisfied with a poorly functioning phone for too long. I understand, haha.
That's really nice of your professor, by the way! And you'll learn HTML in no time. It's not particularly hard and it can easily be visualized.

Tomorrow, I have to present a progress report before my "thesis supervisory committee", which will determine whether or not I get to continue with my doctorate. I knew this was coming (and have known this was coming for a while), but, really, my anxiety level's shot through the roof... I hope it turns out well, but I have no idea, honestly.

My thing is that I hate carrying around laptops - having to do so all the time at work is not fun - and neither am happy with laptop keyboards and trackpads nor with having to carry around real keyboards and mice because I can't stand laptop keyboards and trackpads (no, I don't actually carry a keyboard with me at work, even though I have one at my desk, but I do carry my mouse around with me all the time at work) - and I hate having to carry a laptop charger with me at work because my work laptop's battery barely carries any charge. Anyways, at home I have a perfectly good tower at home, and it would feel redundant to have a laptop just for when I'm in coffee shops or like.

Wow I think I'm never holding the door open for anyone again. Today I was at college and walking out of a on-campus restaurant. Some white jocks--they looked like athletes, and the athletic complex/gym was nearby so they probably were coming from there--came up. I'm a nice person who always holds the door open for people, male or female, so I do.
Guy doesn't even thank me, and as I'm walking away, I hear him to say his friends "Whoo! You see that man, that nigger/negro..." in thus smug "haha that's your rightful place" tone. I couldn't tell what he said that past that, but...yeah.
This isn't the first time, I remember in middle school some white guys came up to me while I was at my locker, pushed me into it and slammed my head against the metal (hurt like hell) while running away and screaming "haha fuck you nigger!". They never got punished for it.

Travis, for me I also hate carrying around laptops and trackpads are no fun (though I'm used to them now), but I enjoy being comfortable when I surf the internet and I can't do that on our desktop which is in the office. Also I don't have a computer at work so I must bring my laptop everyday.

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
I have a work laptop I also use privatly (hell, I'm using it right now :)), and it's a really nice one, except that the tiny tiny tiny plastic thingies that hold the battery are broken after it fell (there's a nasty bump in the metal as well, which is rather sharp, so when typing on the laptop keyboard you get dents in your wrist, but usually I'm using a docking station), so the battery drops out if you're not careful. And since I'm always on standby (instead of hibernate), my memory content is lost etc. But I can't call that venting, as well, it's a very nice laptop otherwise (8 core i7 @ 2.4GHz with 24GiB memory).
@Vik: if you're low on cash, I'd go for an entry-level laptop, which can be had for around $300 (which may already be quite a sum, if you're broke, I realize that), and they're bound to be faster than what you had. Alternatively, by a second-hand one, or a refurbished one.

A small rant. I hate getting blood work done. I really hope this lab was as good as it was 2 years ago. I don't feel like getting stuck multiple times for a single set of blood draws. *drinks water*

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
Yeah, another thing is that I'm afraid of breaking a laptop or a smartphone, whereas this isn't a factor with my tower, and my tablet is cheap enough that I really don't care that much if it gets broken (even though I never have broken any of the above, aside from scuffing my old tablet a bit - screen intact though - when it fell out of what I was carrying it in).

Once again, I gave into my tendency toward procrastination and waited until today to register to vote. Unfortunately, I cannot remember whether I filled out the form correctly and I will have to wait at least a week before I get confirmation either way. By then it will be too late to attempt to register again.
Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
I was invited by the lead for another team to lunch today, along with an architect on my team, as thanks for my competing a feature that the other team had really wanted to be implemented. We went to the Olive Garden (read: way too much food). Unfortunately, I had barely any appetite and was not very talkative (read: depression at work), so I ate as little as I could get away with eating (thankfully the item I ordered was actually pretty small, to my surprise) and just let the architect from my team do most of the talking. Unfortunately the other two people ordered two different appetizers, and the lead for the other team was wondering why I was not eating any of the calamari (to which I just said and repeated that I was full, which did not seem to convince him).
(This somehow feels like a first world problem to me, even though it probably isn't one.)

This particular lab is the only one I've run into that has consistently managed to get a draw on the first stick on me (which is why I'm going with an out of network lab). When my record is eight sticks to get a blood draw and my average is three, mode is actually two, but when they have trouble on me they tend to REALLY have trouble. Not sure I'll ever get used to it if the Army didn't get me used to it.Travis B. wrote:I have gotten used to it, even though these days I am only having to get it done once a year.
