Lexember 2017

Post by Šọ̈́gala »

Well, everybody, Lexember is here again. Let's not forget the reason for the season: the expansion of the vocabulary of a beloved conlang ... or, in my case this year, the creation of vocabulary from scratch for a language that did not have a name before today. This year, I have also a created a Lexember tumblr, so I will be crossposting.

Day 1: Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą /vàqʼõ̀ʔ nã̀ʃã́/ n. “the Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą language”

< /wàqòᵑɡ/ “jaw.ᴄᴏɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛ” + /nã̀g/ “people, folk” (cf. /nã̀ᵑɡ/ “face, facing”) + /a ː / “3ᴘʟ.ᴘᴏss” (clitic)

lit. “our people’s jaw”. Note semi-regular ejective neutralisation and accompanying high tone: /nã̀gàː/ > /nã̀kʼàː/ > /nã̀kàː/ > /nã̀ʃã́/. Treated regularly as one word, we would expect the final outcome to be /nã̀kʼã̀/. The 3ᴘʟ.ᴘᴏss clitic regularly assimilates nasalisation from a neighboring syllable.

Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą day 3: qhāhta /χáːhtá/ n. “scrubland, heath, arid lands with some tree cover near a desert”

< /qáː/ “not intense, to a low degree, weak, sickly” + /stàː/ “woods”

lit. “weak woods”. That this was an early compound is indicated by the shortening of the vowel in the second syllable.

It's plenty taken off from my perspective. Lots of Lexember activity on conlang-l and tumblr. Not sure what the Zeeb's deal is.

On the contrary, Lexember is quite busy in the CONLANG-L and Twitter realms.

I know this story is quite morbid and has the unexpected twist; however, this explains why calling someone a "fox" is a derogatory term. Besides, I only have just under 400 words, so this is quite the accomplishment for me.

The term "fox" is loosely applied here since it is the closest animal we on Earth have that looks remotely like the nuphi

Vaq’ǫ̂ʔ Nąśą day 13: kahsāhe /káhsáːhé/ v. “to forage, to search for food, to gather edible wild plants, to engage in harmless gossip”

< /kàʃt͡ʃáb/ “food.ᴄᴏɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛ” + /sì/ “ᴠʙᴢ”

lit. “to food”. Note that this term can be used with an animal or human subject with somewhat different meanings. Of humans, it normally means specifically gathering berries, roots, and other wild-growing plant material. Of animals, it refers to various behaviours in which the animal appears to be searching for food, with the exception of stalking large prey, e.g. prey larger than a mouse.
