Re: Paradigm-arrhea

Post by Soap »

Is there another word i can use instead of "possessed"? It doesnt even seem to have a Leipzig gloss abbreviation. although it does show INAL and ALIEN for inalienable & alienable possession respectively, i would think that they'd be integrated with the numbers as are the verb markers. I rarely use glosses but I wish there was a good abbreviation that didnt collide with abbreviations for "possessive", which has nearly the opposite meaning.

Early Middle Laqar:

(This is actually a transitive verb, but here is just, for the finite forms, the intransitive paradigm, used for antipassive or passive usages, because the transitive paradigm is just far too massive for me to compile except through automation, and would be too much paradigm-arrhea even for this thread.)

This I don't have a clue about; I wish there was a convenient abbrevation for something with this meaning, but I've never found one.

if y'all are talking about marking nouns for possessing and being possessed, the only solution really is to just make up your own abbreviation. of course this might require another abbreviation to indicate which two objects correspond with each other (the possesed and the possessor) in the gloss, but it shouldn't be a huge problem if you tinker a little.

I would go with something like POSD, for possessed, or POSM, for possessum, for the abbreviation, to make it unambiguous that is marking the possessum and not the possessor.

Re: Paradigm-arrhea

Post by Vijay »

I'm confused. Why would you need to have separate abbreviations for possessum vs. possessor? Isn't it clear from the rest of the gloss and the translation? E.g.

child-POSS stick
'the child's stick'

makes it clear that it's the possessor that's being marked.

child stick-POSS
'the child's stick'

makes it clear that it's the possessum that's being marked.

child-POSS stick-POSS
'the child's stick'

makes it clear that it's both that are being marked.

One approach that would work would be to mark the possessor with GEN and mark the possessum with POSS; this of course assumes the existence of a genitive, though.

and there's the possibility of there being multiple owners with their respective possessums.

That does look boring, with how superficially regular it looks. Contrast that with Early Middle Laqar, which has so many different potential paradigms, with there being no real clear "regular" one that most verbs or nouns follow.

Yes, there's a lot of regularity; in that language family, alternations that developed from mobile stress accent tended to be analogized out across the verbal system. Cf. Deghuri:

gori fight.AP<1/2>-1.ABS
gore fight.AP<1/2>-2.ABS
gureš fight.AP<3>-3A.ABS
gure fight.AP<3>-3I.ABS

gora fight<1/2>-1.ABS
goro fight<1/2>-2.ABS
gure fight<3>-3A.ABS
gur fight<3>-3I.ABS

mə̄kura 1S.M.TOP-fight<1/2>-1.ABS
mə̄kuro 1S.M.TOP-fight<1/2>-2.ABS
mə̄kəre 1S.M.TOP-fight-3A.ABS
mə̄kur 1S.M.TOP-fight-3I.ABS

mīgorə 1S.F.TOP-fight<1/2>-1.ABS
mīgoru 1S.F.TOP-fight<1/2>-2.ABS
mīgəre 1S.F.TOP-fight<3>-3A.ABS
mīgər 1S.F.TOP-fight<3>-3I.ABS

It might seem like there's a lot going on here, but these are the basic alternations for transitive verbs: you have the antipassive paradigm, the basic transitive paradigm, the first topic-marked paradigm, and the second topic-marked paradigm.

It's a little more complicated in this particular verb, because the initial g- is (diachronically) a 'complex initial', meaning that it triggers length on preceding vowels and is voiced word-initially. (Voicing in the second topic-marked paradigm is regular.) But that length is only doing two things: first, forcing mīgəre and mīgərə instead of migre and migrə (trimoraic syllables are prohibited), and second, forcing mə̄k- instead of *mk- > g-.

(With /g/, we'd still have lenition in the second topic-marked paradigm, but the first topic-marked paradigm would instead begin with ŋg-. NC- clusters are only permitted when voiced.)

This is all boring and regular -- synchronically, we have:
1) three sets of absolutive-marking suffixes: the antipassive -i/-e/-eš/-e, the primary -a/-o/-e/-0, and the secondary -ə/-u/-e/-0
2) three sets of root vowel alternations: the primary -o-/-u-/-u-, the avocalic -u-/-ə-~-0-/-u-, and the vocalic -o-/-ə-~-0-/-ə-~-0-
3) three sets of topic markers: none, the avocalic, and the vocalic

But this is just for disyllabic roots with original final stress, final nonfront vowels, and penultimate long vowels.

Amqoli, OTOH, has one paradigm for all C(C)VCV verbs, and another for most C(C)VCCV verbs, and so on -- and that's just a matter of which vowel deletion rules are phonotactically allowed. There's essentially only one verb paradigm.

I need to figure out some way to regularize Laqar verbal and nominal paradigms, because they are just too complex, with too many possible variations. Even though each basic stem shape like CVC, CV:C, CVCV, CV:CV, CVCV:, CV:CV:, CVCCV, CV:CCV, CVCCV:, CV:CCV:, CVCVC, etc. has a basic paradigm, "weak" consonants like *w, *j, *h, , , *m, and *n and uvular consonants like *qʰ, *qʼ, , and all introduce their own variations upon the paradigms. All this together results in quite a lot of complexity across paradigms.

I just obsoleted all of the paradigms above by introducing phonemic stress into Early Middle Laqar. Well... not exactly - most words follow the same sorts of general patterns with regard to their mobile stress, and from just looking at most words you can figure out where the stress is. Some words, though, follow stress patterns which are not obvious just from looking at them, e.g. yoló and lehó. (Why not yólo and lého? The answer is their proto-forms in Proto-Laqar.)

Have a Saimiar noun declension paradigm. I'll go with sristula, an -a/i declension class noun meaning "petty chieftan, warlord"

Absolutive: stristul-a
Ergative: sristul-ad
Adpositional: sristul-is

Allative: so-sristul-i
Locative: sristul-iath
Ellative: tlê-sristul-i

Instrumental: sristul-iar
Relational: sristul-ai
con quesa- firm believer in the right of Spanish cheese to be female if she so chooses

As you can see, the stress paradigms for Early Middle Laqar nouns and verbs are pretty predictable. Essentially, the left-most /a/, /i/, /u/, /ɛ/, or /ɔ/ in the last three syllables of a word is probably stressed. Of course, /e/ and /o/ can be stressed or unstressed anyplace in the last three syllables of a word provided none of those other phonemes are to its left within the last three syllables, and there is no good pattern for predicting this. Also, this is all thrown out the window if any of /ɕ ʑ kʰ kʼ qʰ qʼ χ ʁ/ are in a word if they reflect uvular consonants in Proto-Laqar, as they can result in /a/ or /ɔ/ where /ə/ would be expected and /e/ and /o/ where /i/ or /u/ would be expected. So maybe they are not that predictable after all.
