Questions or discussions about Almea or Verduria-- also the Incatena. Also good for postings in Almean languages.

Wrong accent?

Post by Ancenande »

I was just looking at the Verdurian Language Introduction page, and I noticed something:
the page about verdurian (bold is mine) wrote:Only two other dialects have any literary development: those of Avéla (due to the importance of the city in the printing industry and as a center of the Eleďe religion) and Ctésifon (the former center of the Empire). Neither of these is strikingly different from Mažtane, especially in written form. The more divergent dialects, such as those in Hežina and Bešbalic, are largely rural and unwritten.
Why does Avéla have an acute accent over the E? It shouldn't...

It's probably just a typo.

The accident is redundant in Mazhtane according to Elena's spelling reform; but Elena wasn't queen of Avéla. :) Though they accepted the reform for most words, they didn't feel like changing the traditional spelling of their city. And that in turn derives from a sort of shibboleth: the Kebreni pronounced it Avelah with an accent on the final syllable (and there should be a dot over the h, but phpbb removes it). Insisting that it was Avéla not Avelá was thus patriotic.

Okay, not a typo. :D

And you've made me feel terribly inadequate for not having a conworld where I can make that sort of cool minutinae :( I really need to decide on a design for the map.
