Gender in IE Langs
Gender in IE Langs
Quick question(s): PIE had/has gender, right? M, F, and N? So, I know how that get simplified into M and F a lot, but are Bengali and English the only established IE langs that merge them all into M (i.e. genderlessness)?
Re: Gender in IE Langs
Some dialects of Scandinavian do. Afrikaans does. Uhhhm. I can't immediately think of any other examples.

Re: Gender in IE Langs
Neither Armenian nor Persian have gender. Walloon has almost completly lost gender.
Re: Gender in IE Langs
Some other languages related to Bengali have also lost grammatical gender, e.g. Assamese, Maithili and Magahi.
Re: Gender in IE Langs
Also, PIE did not have M/N/F. At least not early on.
Early PIE is believed to have had an animacy-based system. Late PIE had developed this into a M/N/F system.

< Cev> My people we use cars. I come from a very proud car culture-- every part of the car is used, nothing goes to waste. When my people first saw the car, generations ago, we called it šuŋka wakaŋ-- meaning "automated mobile".
