@Vampireshark: Ok then, that makes sense.

@Io: Heh, hadn't thought of that.

Rough sketch of some Terpish row houses forming a five unit garden apartment. Each one has about 2000 square feet, which I figured would suffice for an average sized family. I think the shading on the front view came out darker than I intended and the lines could certainly be a lot straighter. I suppose it suffices for a preliminary sketch for more detailed and colored drawings. I do wonder if the architectural style looks too much like modern Western buildings and needs some revision. I wouldn't mind developing a distinctly Terpish æsthetic based on looping curves and organic shapes. It seems rather too simple as well, though I like architecture that relies on functional structures rather than ornament.

The rectangular windows in the upper floors are a bit modern-Earth-looking for me. Maybe have them be arches, or squares, or something.

Another drawing of a Terpish house, this one more fleshed out and colored. I think it could definitely use more detail and better colors. I was going for some sort of pastel-tinted earth tones. I also tried making the columns at the front more ornamental and distinctive.

And some San Francisco style houses inspired by Viktor's mspaint drawings.

It's an attempt to show depth and the fact that they're at an angle, not very well I suppose. Many houses in San Fran have half-hexagon sections sticking out.

It seems I overexposed my idea for the Terpish terraced houses before it was ready. A shame, though I will be working on it and maybe starting a thread on Terpish architecture or something at some point. I really want to develop the organic shape concept, though.

They're called bay windows lol. And nice job, you're using Victorian elements y'know. Those houses aren't unlike old San Fran single-family attached homes.

I ended up randomly writing a poem while speaking with a friend over MSN this morning. I suppose remembering how much fun it once was to wake up early spurred it. It probably took five minutes all totalled, so I doubt it's the best thing I've ever written.

----

When we were flung far from home
We never were alone—
Our happiness was in our hands
When all the world was sleeping.

Nobody noticed us
Just little children playing—
We woke up early with each morn
When all the world was sleeping.

We knew not where we were
But we could not be sad—
A new home came—these rolling hills—
When all the world was sleeping.

If you will follow me
Then I will follow you
Across this land of far away
When all the world is sleeping.

We can stop each day for tea
Just when the sun appears—
These hills are ours and ours alone
When all the world is sleeping.

If you will take my hand
I promise to take yours—
Our happiness shall never end
For all the world is sleeping.

----

I can't think of a satisfactory title for the thing, but I tentatively use Quand tout le monde s'endorme, a literal French rendition of the refrain, and which actually has the same number of syllables if the final e in s'endorme is pronounced and that in monde is not.

And if you call it Quand tout le monde s'endort, it fits even better. :)

Oops, wrong language! I was thinking of English mass nouns taking plural agreement sometimes...

Oh, well, I do like Quand tout le monde s'endort a fair deal better anyway.

Rainer suggested that I read some books on architecture if I really want to draw buildings well. I am working on developing a style for the Terps as well. As you can tell, I am not much for the elaborate ornament of your Victorian buildings. My ideas tend toward the functional more than the decorative. Though admittedly, my designs look rather plain and could use more complexity. I have tried to use functional structures like sweeping roofs and arching columns to add some interest to the design, but those only go so far.

Rainer and others have said it looks kind of dull and I agree. I haven't figured out how to make it more interesting and intricate without looking baroque or unbalanced.

The inspiration struck me today to write a few quatrains. They're not related in any way other than being written in the same hour.

He finds himself most lonely
When he has monkeys in his hair.
But sitting solitary only,
He is most comfortable there.

Imagine that passion, my Dear,
Was no longer seen as mad,
And then the age-old fear
Could its light have had.

Feathers fly, falling freely;
Apples from trees fall gently;
The sun shines bright, sky blue,
And I am happy, just sitting with you.

Language from birth do we all suck,
As each from our mother's breast.
Language is joyful as a good fuck;
Just give me a pen, and screw the rest.

The last one there was actually inspired by this article from Lifehacker's Writing Week.

Scans badly. If I see quatrains I expect them to be either all iambic or trochaic tetrameters, possibly with each other line in trimeter (that's called a ballad stanza).
