Yucopia Project (Massive, Collaborative, and Recruiting New)

Post by Lukas Kelly »

Who's up for some en masse world building? I have stopped pretty much all of my projects, because they were mostly for a specific purpose that has been cancelled for some reason or other, so now I want to do one for fun. I haven't really done any hard conlanging in awhile, but I've done a lot of world building. I don't know if you can see this link, but it's only one era of a world I have created. I put a lot of depth in my projects, but I usually lack an audience that gives a shit, pardon my French.

http://fairview.deadfrontier.com/online ... c=438016.0

So, what I am proposing, is that we world build, with each person in charge of one civilization's culture. We could do an early era, than have ours interact and see what comes out, we can do a middle era, and work backwards as well as forwards, we could do just one period, or any other loads of things.

Each civilization may have these, among with other things

-Conlangs(Kind of a Given)
-Society Structure
-Subcultures
-Criminal Underworld
-Slangs and Argots
-Religions
-Macro-Cultures
-Social Classes
-Literature
-So forth

This won't be extremely time consuming once it's going, but it's long term. Looking at this, we could really do some cool stuff. So let's just discuss for now.

EDIT: Ok, we're looking for new people to occupy spots on the map, and to develop a now bronze-age civilization. Just post and we'll help you out.

I'm willing, though I'll be focusing more on another collaborative project.

How many proto-languages/cultures should there be?

The link requires one to log in.

Sounds interesting, though. How far back in history will the project start?

I had an idea very similar to this one, to make a comprehensive conworld, with languages and geography and such. The world would be similar to earth (inhabited by the same animals, with the same climates) and everything would be realistic (that is, no fantasy elements). Additionally our perspective would be like citizens of "modern" countries (ie similar technology level to earth today) looking back on history. This gives an advantage to an omniscient point of view, because you can just wave things away like "but we could never precisely reconstruct the exact pronunciations" :P

If what you propose is anything like what I just described, count me in.

Well, everyone would be taking care of one proto-group. But as for when we start this, we need to discuss. Should we do it ancient early modern, what?

My suggestion was all of the above.

I would think it might be more interesting if fantastical elements were allowed, though that might make things rather messy (or more interesting) when systems collide.

I have enough conlangs going already, but I'll do phonology and diachronics in that area if someone else feels like covering morphology, syntax, and diachronics there.

Sounds fun. I doubt I'll be able to start until Tuesday or Wednesday, though; I'll probably have to spend all of tomorrow on homework.

As I just pm'd Nortaneous, I'll be on IRC on #conlang at irc.freenode.net, I suppose, if anyone would like to collaborate. My username there is "xvedejas".

You know, this sounds quite interesting. If this would be a realistic world with no magic or such, I'd like to join.

Obligatory Akana plug... :P Thread, forum, wiki.

But seriously, I'll be interested to see how this turns out. I think you have a sensible idea of choosing a set point and working towards that through history :)

I think it should start relatively early on, for example around what would the the time of the Ancient Greeks on Earth, that way there would be plenty to start out with, with opportunities to figure out just how everything got that way, but also plenty of space to figure out what will happen when the civilizations get bigger and start running into each other, if they haven't started already.

Magic would be interesting to consider, but not required, a more realistic world would be okay as well.

If you guys would be willing to humor a noob, I'd love to try.

But, is this Earth, or just an Earth-like planet?
(I don't know how I'd work something from Ancient Greece or the like.)

Ancient Greece was just an example for a (rough) time of where to start, not an actual civilization to go off of.

I know, I just meant I think it'd be harder (for me) to start with a civilisation here on Earth.

I think I'd like to join in even if there is nothing fantastical whatever about the world.

It's spelled bangwaggen, idjit! And I'm onnit! :D

I would love, love, love to be part of this. I would love a place to graft my theoretical conculture that has its roots in my 5th grade, 11-year-old self. But seriously, this sounds pretty fun. I would love to have some sort of incentive to conlang. And if you're humoring those other noobs, why not me? Illogical, I say! Illogical!
