Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
Yes, that sounds good... maybe do something similar to a civilization game, where a certain period of time goes by between "turns", long at first, but becoming shorter closer to modern times, as a 1000 year jump would be easy to do with a stone age people, as not too much of interest would happen, but a 1000 year jump in a more modern setting would jump over a ton of history.

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
I liked Lukas Kelley's idea better. Civ V is a computerized board game, while this is supposed to be a believable counterpart to Earth. The turn-based approach of Civ V won't yield as natural results as a willy-nilly unplanned timeline, IMO.

I've added what I have so far to the wiki now. I still have to create an article about the language, but that will have to wait until Sunday (and so will any revisions/editions to what I have).

Not by design and, I think, not by metric either.dwnielsen wrote:Is that haiku?Torco wrote: Anyways, with me, valiums and roach surrounding it, the savanna to the south..
Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
Whatever the time plan is, it has to be something that would be fair to both people who were doing civilized cultures with a recorded history and people doing cultures kept in a hunter-gatherer or semi-agricultural stasis. This is why I don't like the idea of "turns": what will those people be doing all that time? The more I think about it, a free-for-all sounds better (just as long as any interactions between cultures are approved by both parties. We don't want, for example, someone getting really eager, spending 12 hours writing the history of how his culture got to the nuclear age, then conquering the world all on his own)
Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
I like Ebba Leaci's suggestion of 1000-year gaps, but I don't think it'd be a problem for people who wanted to focus on the Iron Age stage of their conculture. If they don't mind what happens to the conpeople after the Iron Age, then they can be left to be colonized or wiped out or assimilated by others. If they do mind, then they can keep on with the timeline, but focus separately on the Iron Age, perhaps in a group if there are others who also want Iron Age.
Another similar idea might be to get just a brief timeline from the Stone Age to (however far forward people want to go), and then we can split into groups focusing on developing our own nations at different time periods. For example, an Iron Age Thread, a Medieval Thread, a Space Exploration Thread, etc. And we can be in different groups at once, if we want. Or something.

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
The turns I'm talking about aren't quite like the civilization ones, everyone would be on the same turn at the same time, working on a certain time period that's the same for everyone. (Though if they want to go back and flesh out older events, they can do that too.) Then once that timeline of 1000, 500, 100, or whatever years is reasonably done, everyone goes on to the next turn of whatever years, and figures out a basic outline of what happens, then starts working that out, and the process starts over again.
Doing everything from the stone age to modern times would be too much work to do all at once, even just as outlines. (Especially for figuring out future versions of languages)

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
I'm with Ebba on this one, and while people should get to keep their cultures at the level they want to, I'd like for a more collaborative shade to this, that is, mix it up... it would be neat to see, say, a Mevce-Paluka people sometime in the future, and I'd be willing to do a switcharoo with someone at the level of "yeah, sure, you take these guys into the iron age, and I'll make your guys become a federal nation-state"
Anyway, before considering any of this I should be working on these guys' lang

It is until we make contactCockroach wrote:The way I thought it would work was that we would all describe our region and our people in the equivalent of the stone age, then once we had that all written up we;d advance to the bronze age, iron age, feudalism, early modern age, etc. Those who wanted to keep their culture in technological stasis could say so and spend the time other people were developing history to further flesh out their people, until they made contact with another group
Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
I imagine at some point, people will have to collaborate directly on mixing parts, e.g, the conlect of immigrants in another's land, but I don't want to just hand someone my entire concreation.
Unless you meant something more along the lines of "This happens. Figure out the cause and effect" instead of "This happens. Here's why and what resulted."

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
It's more of a create a cause, and then affect. Effects will not just be the outcome of some action, but your reaction to it along with the action itself. It's not like most things are going to be out of your control. For example, with the conlect thing, you would collaborate with the creator of the immigrants on the conlect.valiums wrote:I imagine at some point, people will have to collaborate directly on mixing parts, e.g, the conlect of immigrants in another's land, but I don't want to just hand someone my entire concreation.![]()

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
Actually I meant the latter, but now I like the former also. Meh, I say we figure it out as we go.valiums wrote:I imagine at some point, people will have to collaborate directly on mixing parts, e.g, the conlect of immigrants in another's land, but I don't want to just hand someone my entire concreation.![]()

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
We should come up with a wordlist of 500-1000 words for our conlangs. The Swadesh list might be a good one.

For later langs, definitely, but do we really need to put that much time into a proto-lang? If we do, tell me. I haven't really worked with building language families much.

How about this?
100 words isn't that bad.

So, first 100 on the list?

Uh, yes? Otherwise you can't derive a daughter-lang.Lukas Kelly wrote:For later langs, definitely, but do we really need to put that much time into a proto-lang? If we do, tell me. I haven't really worked with building language families much.

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
The 100 word list at the bottom of that page would be better, taking the first 100 from the first list would skip some things as they're in some sort of order, all of the landscape and color terms seem to be in the second half, for example. The 100 word list a the bottom, however, takes words from all parts of the list.
Or you could just do the entire 200 word list if you feel like it.
Edit: There is now a page for the 100 word Swadesh lists on the wiki.

Re: Anyone want to Start on a Mass Project?
100 page Swadesh lists?! Oops. That has been fixed. 100 words, not pages.
1. Come up with the proto-society structure: Pretty much.
2. What resources they have: Sort of, only resources that they actually consider resources right now.
3. Regional plants and animals: Yes
4. Weapons: Yes
5. Proto-conlang: Yes
6. Proto-conreligion: Yes, at least basics
7. Figure out what make your people think something is: No
a. beautiful
b. funny
c. scary
8. Finish up your proto-people: Well, it seems to be mostly done so far.
