Sorry I haven't been doing much lately. I hope I'll be back in "the mood" soon. Then I can give Treskro some people to interact with

Urgh, I keep putting it off (like every fucking other thing). I'm not sure where to go next with the language (ie deciding on a syntactic pattern and stuff) and there's the whole matter of the culture too. Absolutely no idea where to begin with that.

They'd probably not... the Tebêt crown enjoys huge popularity. they would have better luck trying to put other regional powers against it, but they'd have to know a bit about local politics first.

you can make cultures related to other cultures, like variations on a theme. different cultures in real worlds are similar, after all, especially if they're close.

By coup, I meant kind of a forcible military takeover located at central leadership, rather than a popular revolution.

Does this seem too advanced for right now? I mean, my people obviously have nothing better to do than sit around and research stuff. :D

No, not at all. It's a simple mill-like device. One thing though, it would take a lot of energy to displace enough water at a fast enough rate to move. So I'd put something there about crews being similar to roman galley slaves. You'd need a lot of men.

Go for it! Cultures advance at different paces.

It might also be interesting to have the Ialtuxhe propulsion system lost after a while, the way so many inventions were (the textbook example was greek fire, but there's others I'm not remembering. I believe the Chinese invented incendiary bombs that could be carried by birds)

Oh, nice. that's more like it. That would be successful, too, since Tebetian politics are kind of open and naive at this point. I imagine it playing something like this

__

The palace was overrun, in the middle of the night, by a small detachment of elite Sbakaz units, members ranking high in the Sbakaz warrior caste [can't find the page right now], armed to the teeth and moving coordinately, following a carefully detailed plan. They gained access to the court via the roof during a rainy night in which people expected to hear sounds coming from above. Much of the royal family was assasinated, including King Cheru, but not his son, Cheru II, who went underground and became an outlaw. Key figures in the Tabetian administration were held hostage and kept as political puppets. The next day the bulk of the Sbakaz forces disembarked and occupied Tabêt in a generally peaceful manner. Formally nothing had changed; mid-level public officials kept their positions, King Cheru was supposedly still ruling, and everyone involved was threatened into silence. Many in the Tebetian palace accepted the new regime out of fear, and between ignorance and inaction, the Sbakaz took full control of the Tabetian state in less than a year. now the fate of the Tabetian Kingdom hangs upon the answer to a single question: what will the silent conquerors do next?

Whoa, I fancy this is an interesting romance... maybe even a nice novel plot... I wish I could do that creative writing thing xD
______

Regarding waterfall propulsion... I'm not sure about the math [we should really ask someone who knows math to do this properly... like Vampireshark] but from what I gather:

Say you have a water tank of 5 tons [the 1 thousand kilo ones, I think staters use other brand of ton] at two metres above the engine has a potential energy of around 9800 joules. Say you want to operate this thing for 100 seconds: you need to have the engine produce no more than 98 joules per second, and even at perfect efficiency, this means no more than 0,13 horsepower. now here I fail, since I don't think I can figure out how to calculate drag through water and all that physics, but... 0,13 horsepower isn't a bunch of power: I'm strong enough to produce 0,8 hp for a few hours [well, 1000 watts /1,3 hp for about an hour, which probably means 0,2 hp for an entire afternoon] and... well, 0,13 horsepower isn't going to produce thrust to move 5 tons of water, much less the boat that holds it, the engine, and whatever cargo.

I sound like a spoilsport, but I don't think such a thing would work.

For the waterfall propulsion, it seems to me that the bands/ropes are pre-loaded on land with one of the waterfalls, then this would be somehow held in place and transported to the ship, where it is attached to a propeller and released when its time to use it, so there wouldn't be any water tanks taken on the ships.

you're right, I read treskro's article wrong.

Springs sound even less viable to me, though: now on this I can't do the math properly, but I'm not sure how much energy a torque device can store, so I can't say... I don't imagine a spring can store too much. according to wikipedia, springs have an energy density of 0.0003mj/k, so for the same amount of energy [9800 j] you need a 32 kilo spring, assuming access to modern technology and materials. remember, 9800 joules only gives you a man's power for about a minute and a half. for a spring which will give you, say, 10 men's power for a day [1 hp during 24 hours, 644544000 joules by my calculations] you need a... pretty big spring. around two million kilo, by my calculations.

Hold up a second, why have you put a city in my bit?

Remember, moko, you have only a tiny corner in the southwest. The rest of that mediterranean zone has been claimed.

No, jseamus has already claimed that area. I've claimed the bit just to the north of him where the climate changes, so that coastline is filled. You could maybe have the central desert in that continent, or the tundra, or the rainforest.

obviously this is annoying, but people elsewhere have claimed vast areas covering half a continent in some cases.

I figure you could take a spot within the area of some of our less active members... like Weirdminn... Also, you're welcome to the eastern half of the Southern Keskus. I don't see the point of having a region the size of China to yourself... you're not gonna develop it in proper detail anyway.

It existed between the years -250 to around 300
Is this your own year numbering system or do we have a unified one?

I didn't realise I put them that far north, my bad. Well, just think of them as all being in my corner. ;D

I'm taking year zero as the "now" year.
