How do you choose the words? Is it a priori, random, or with borrowings from natlangs? Or all of the above?

Thanks! And, "It smiles me"? That's creative use of the applicative there.cedh audmanh wrote:Lau na ze dimana hai pwesti wa zu. Ka shembwevi zu.
None of them are outright borrowed, but - if you include the undefined ones still at the bottom - around 2/3 are from Haitian Creole, with the original definitions thrown away and, most of the time, the word shape modified. A few more come from Japanese in the same manner, and the rest I've simply made up.Soap wrote:How do you choose the words? Is it a priori, random, or with borrowings from natlangs? It was browsing the Haitian Creole wikipedia (which is a fairly pitiful thing, but still) a couple weeks ago that led to this. I couldn't resist doing something with all those nice words, and on a whim I started throwing together a conlang based around them, deliberately choosing interesting natlang features I've never really done before in a conlang, like classifiers and obviation and spatial deixis. And, very unusually for me, most of it all just snapped together in the course of about three days. (But making the results presentable took a further week.)

I didn't find a causative marker, but I still wanted to say "it makes me smile"...Radius Solis wrote:Thanks! And, "It smiles me"? That's creative use of the applicative there.cedh audmanh wrote:Lau na ze dimana hai pwesti wa zu. Ka shembwevi zu.

Re: Hwi pelman Dimana Lokud!
An update's coming in a couple days, filling some description gaps and adding more lexicon. I'll be adding a few more example sentences for existing sections too, so if there's any particular area anyone wants to see more (or any) examples of, speak now. Already scheduled: more examples of classifier usage, examples of voice usage, examples for obviation.
Yep! Might have used a particle at the beginning, but that's more a style issue.Imralu wrote:Pelzai Dimana Lokud. Pwezye beyo. Hwi jemezau beyo.

So, okay, yeah. Apparently "a couple" means "thirty or so", but who's counting. And I didn't even do half the things I said I would. Instead there are new sections on control-specifying verbs, how to form copular clauses, and how to form subclauses, plus a whole bunch of new vocabulary. All the new sections and a few of the previous ones now have plentiful example sentences.
