Stupid customers or clients, hilarious occurrences, strange coincidences, etc etc etc. Any good work stories? Here are a couple from me:
A woman came through a register line at the store I work at a few years ago -- it was a "20 items or less" line and she had quite a few more than that, but the cashier, Autumn, a friend of mine, took her through anyway.
After she had scanned everything and bagged it the woman took out her debit card and slid it through the reader. It was declined, however, so she told Autumn to take an item off. She tried again and it was denied again. Thus began a long period of the customer subtracting several items at a time, adding a couple more, subtracting a few more, on and on and on, with her card never being accepted at all.
Finally her order was down to only a single sippy cup which Autumn rebagged. As she did so, the cup made a slight "clunk" noise when it hit the bottom of the bag. The woman screamed "DON'T BREAK MY LIGHT BULB!!!" Autumn, extremely confused, said, "...it's a sippy cup." "YOU DON'T KNOW ME!!! YOU DON'T KNOW MY SHIT!!! YOU WEREN'T BACK THERE BUYIN' IT WITH ME!!!" Autumn just asked her if she was going to try her card again, and the woman threw her hands in the air, flailed them around dramatically, and yelled "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!", then bolted out of the store.
I work at the customer service desk at said store. A man came in once to get his check cashed, but there were two problems: 1, it was over $3,000 dollars, higher than our cashing limit at the time and 2, he had tried to cash it the day before and was denied by the system, so the employee told him to call the number of the cashing service we use to see if they could temporarily approve it.
So, he did and they told him they'd approve it, but it would take a week to go through their system and allow him to actually cash it. The idiot, of course, came in the next day to try again and, of course, was denied a second time. He proceeded to shout and make a big scene, yelling about how "This is bullshit!" and "It's my fucking money, I want it cashed!" So, then he asked me to put $200 on his money card. I ran the card through and told him there was a $3 reloading fee included. He started screaming again, "There's a #3 fee to buy it, there's a $3 fee to reload it, there's a $2 fee to take money out of an ATM, they're squeezing every fucking penny they can!" He paid it, though, so I hit the button to finish the transaction, only to get an error saying "Debit not approved. Call authorizer." And he started screaming again.
He then grabbed a pair of scissors and started shredding his money card, but got too into it and cut off the tip of his thumb, which started bleeding like crazy all over the desk. He, of course, made no effort to stop the bleeding and simply stood there while I frantically tried to clean up the desk, avoid getting blood on me, and shoved paper towels at him in an attempt to get him to wrap his finger. I was also practically begging him to go to the bathroom, but his only response was "Yeah, I'll get to it."
Finally he did go to the bathroom, tracking blood the whole way there, and I managed to clean up the desk while he was gone. But then he returned, still bleeding, still tracking blood, and got it on the desk again. After we finally managed to stop the bleeding and clean the desk I picked up the ruined card and started writing down the numbers, because I figured he'd want to cancel it. He didn't understand why I was writing them down until I started on the phone number, at which point he shouted, "Oh no! I'm not talking to them! YOU call them, YOU get my money back!"
Now, it takes a lot to make me lose my cool and I was already on the edge, but that was the last straw. I got right in his face and shouted back that it was his card that he paid for and that I was going to do absolutely nothing to help him. I did dial the phone for him, but then I handed it to him and left to clock out (my shift had been over for a while). My hands were shaking so much, I was so angry, that I had a hard time actually clocking out. After I did, though, I walked back up front to see how it ended. By this point two managers were there and he was talking to them while he was talking to the person on the phone. Somehow he got cut off on the phone (it was probably his fault), and he SLAMMED that phone down on the desk so hard I'm surprised it didn't break and he screamed at the top of his lungs "YOU CALL THEM BACK!!!! YOU GET ME MY GODDAMN MONEY!!!" The managers called the police and the guy actually stayed and waited for them, before tearing into them. I'm not sure if he was detained or arrested at all, but I know he was back in the store a few weeks later, though I haven't seen him since.
