A name I rather like the sound of is Eyjafjallajökull.

What. Second-syllable stress what. Also [a] what.

(For comparison, I have, broadly, [i.læˈstɪ.sɪ.ɾi]. I'm not quite sure whether the first [s] goes with the second or third syllable, and saying it over and over is making it sound weird)

I think that may be a dialect thing. Sort of like how in Received Pronunciation "laboratory" is /ləˈbɔr.ə.tri/ while in American Broadcast English it's /ˈlæb.rə.tɔ.ri/ I think. What dialects do you both speak?

As far as I know, both varieties of American English. I'm from Connecticut (the Tri-State area, so some influence from New York English), and vs is also from the US- I believe he's originally from North Carolina or something?

Also to speakers of BritE have different stress for "elasticity"?

I think in RP they pronounce it iˈlɑ.stɪ.sə.ti, but I'm not sure about other U.K. dialects. For a relatively small island, Great Britain has a lot of dialectal variation (the Queen's English, Norf London, Cockney, and Oop North are some of the more iconic ones)

When I'm in the US, I live in North Carolina. However:
-My mother's from Ohio; my dad from West Virginia.
-I was born in Hawaii.
-I moved to Washington when I was two. So I started learning to speak in Seattle.
-Moved to Germany when I was just shy of 6. I went to school on a US military installation but watched almost exclusively British television from '97 to '01 (and still a lot, but to a reduced degree in '02).
-I returned to the US, and Texas, when I was 12.
-Moved to NC when I was 14.

So I speak a bastard English. (Some foreigners have thought I'm not American because of my accent.)

Yes, the syllable stress, at least for me, goes to the second syllable, though the [a] is probably closer to [æ], thinking about it. (Transcribing my own English feels strange.) There's a secondary stress on the third syllable, but it's very weak.

Also, for what it's worth, elastic is [əˈlæ.stɪk]. Adding the suffix doesn't, for me, shift the stress.
