Romanization challenge thread
Re: Romanization challenge thread
Caledonian:
/p t ʈ k q/ <b d d g q>
/pʰ tʰ ʈʰ kʰ qʰ/ <p t t c c>
/f s ʂ x χ h/ <f s s j j h>
/m n ɳ ŋ ɴ/ <m n n nh ng>
/l ɭ/<l l>
/w r ɽ ɣ ʁ/<w z z r r>
/a i~ɨ u/ <a i u>(after alveolar/velar/labial)
<e y o>(after retroflex/uvular/glottal)
Very deliberate discrepancy with the plosives versus nasals. This way I can distinguish:
/ɴi/<ngy> vs. /nki/<ngi> vs. /ŋi/<nhi>vs./nhi/<nhy>
Random things that can be made with the phonology:
/maɽuʂuɴɭa fukati qʰaɳʂuɴuʈ pʰukatup /
Mazosongle fugadi qensongod pugadub.
/p t ʈ k q/ <b d d g q>
/pʰ tʰ ʈʰ kʰ qʰ/ <p t t c c>
/f s ʂ x χ h/ <f s s j j h>
/m n ɳ ŋ ɴ/ <m n n nh ng>
/l ɭ/<l l>
/w r ɽ ɣ ʁ/<w z z r r>

Re: Romanization challenge thread
I have made a new romanization for Caledonian, because the many dots above and below are a pain in the butt to type and a chore to read. I have done away with the dots below by replacing them with an apostrophe following the letter, and the dots above by new graphemes. Thus:
/p t ʈ k q/ p t t' k k'
/pʰ tʰ ʈʰ kʰ qʰ/ ph th t'h kh k'h
/ʰpʰ t ʰʈ ʰk ʰq/ hp ht ht' hk hk'
/ʰpʰ ʰtʰ ʰʈʰ ʰkʰ ʰqʰ/ hph hth ht'h hkh hk'h
/f s ʂ x χ h/ f s s' x x' h
/m n ɳ ŋ ɴ/ m n n' ng ng'
/l ɭ/ l l'
/w r ɽ ɣ ʁ/ w r r' g g'
/a i~ɨ u/ a i u
Including the pre- and ambiaspirated stops. All plain ASCII and easy to type.
BTW: There was a mistake in the old, discarded version. The third click is meant to be palatal, not lateral, but I always confuse those IPA symbols.
/p t ʈ k q/ p t t' k k'
/pʰ tʰ ʈʰ kʰ qʰ/ ph th t'h kh k'h
/ʰpʰ t ʰʈ ʰk ʰq/ hp ht ht' hk hk'
/ʰpʰ ʰtʰ ʰʈʰ ʰkʰ ʰqʰ/ hph hth ht'h hkh hk'h
/f s ʂ x χ h/ f s s' x x' h
/m n ɳ ŋ ɴ/ m n n' ng ng'
/l ɭ/ l l'
/w r ɽ ɣ ʁ/ w r r' g g'
/a i~ɨ u/ a i u

Re: Romanization challenge thread
Noob here. Let me know if I'm not doing this right.
This is something I'm toying with, inspired by (but not strictly) taking the places of articulation from Hindi and the manners of articulation from Swahili. For vowels, I started with the Swahili vowels and added a few from Hindi that seemed to fill gaps.
/ m n ɳ ŋ /
/ ᵐb ⁿd ᶯɖ ᵑg /
/ b d ɖ g /
/ pʰ tʰ ʈʰ kʰ /
/ v z /
/ ᶬv ⁿz /
/ ɖ͡ʐ ʈ͡ʂ / (these are affricates, I don't know if I did the connection right)
/ f s ʂ h /
/ w l j /
/ r /
n, ⁿd, d, tʰ are dental.
Vowels are:
/ a i ɪ u ʊ ɛ ɔ /
I don't have much vocabulary or morphology worked out, so let's just say a sentence could look something like this:
ɳapkʰa fɔʈ pʰɛʈ͡ʂ kʰilɔŋ, guwɛ aⁿza ᵐbʊ ʂɪɖ͡ʐuni hanat. vʊla ᶯɖɔʈ sijagʊm ᵑgɔɖɛɳ da ⁿdatʰiruk.
Please suggest a romanization.

It seems that Nuosu words kinda lack flesh, so perhaps tones can be marked in a different way:

Pinetree's one:

<f s sh>

<r l y w>
<a e i o u ṛ>
More or less ElectorDark's romanization, but I switched the two <r> graphemes (I prefer underdots for syllabic consonants if I can fit them in without any ambiguity) and digraphs shouldn't cause any problems because of the syllable structure so avoiding diacritics is easier and there'd only be three digraphs anyway.
