Unfortunately, we share the same snobs. What's really weird is hearing from an RP speaker [aɪm ˈskɒ.tɪʃ θruː ænd θruː].finlay wrote:in england, not the uk. stop it.

Well, from an outsider's POV, British English = English English has always been my impression (received pronunciation, the Queen's English, what is taught here; that is... BE is certainly something people say/use/teach). Is that widespread synecdoche annoying to you Finlay xD?

Meaning my allophonic transcription sickened you of that whole affair? Or, that my "allophonic" transcription was narrow enough to be phonemic?Viktor77 wrote:I know I was once rather negative towards phonemic transcription, but now I realise its value

The upper class are the same all over the UK. Except the Scottish nobs dance around in kilts exclaiming "What-ho!" Before seeing your post I didn't know what a synecdoche was. And when I'll finish this post I probably forget.
Pronunciation guess: [ˈsɪ.nək.dɜʉʃ ~ ˈsɪ.nək.dɜʉtʃ]
Wiki: /sɪˈnɛkdəkiː/
Woops.
Proving I am not of the upper class, otherwise I'd probably know how to pronounce this suspiciously toff-looking word.
[sɪ̈.ˈnɛk.də.kɪɨ̯] it is then.

It was more narrow than others I've seen, but not enough to be phonemic in my book. But we could debate what's phonemic all day long, I suppose.2+3 clusivity wrote:Meaning my allophonic transcription sickened you of that whole affair? It's quite astounding how all of these Greek loans haven't yet switched to spelling pronunciation (well, that is, less astounding if you remember that the educated Eton toffs are the only people to use such words...)ol bofosh wrote:The upper class are the same all over the UK. I am not sure what value a phonemic transcription would have here--in this thread. The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
<roof>, /ɻuf/, [ɻuf]
<roofs>, /ɻufs/, [ɻuvz]
The "How do You Phonemicize X Thread" would be pretty asinine. Are you suggesting people should attempt more narrow transcriptions?

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Forgive me for necroing the thread, but how do y'all pronounce "ZBBer"? I've always said [zɪbə˞].
I did have a bizarrely similar (to the original poster's) accident about four years ago, in which I slipped over a cookie and somehow twisted my ankle so far that it broke
Aeetlrcreejl > Kicgan Vekei > me /ne.ses.tso.sats/What kind of cookie?
Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
I started mentally pronouncing it a long time ago as [zʌbɚ] or [zəbɚ]. But in real life I'd say "board members", or "ZBB members" if for some reason it's not clear (and I say [zibibi] rather than [zɛdbibi] fuck you britain).
Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
[θe.βe.ˈβeɾ]
(doesn't make sense in Spanish either - Finlay, it's pretty interesting you analyze the Z as /zi:/ and not /zɛd/, cos I kind of do the equivalent, /θe/ and not /ˈθe.ta/ [but I said it doesn't make sense because /θe/ is also "c"]).
In English I'd go /zi.bi.ˈbiɚ/ (zeebee beer) or /ˈzi.bi.bɚ/ (zéábeaber).

[zɛd.bɪ̈.'bɪi̯.ɜ] or [zɛd.bɪ̈.'bɪi̯ɜ̯] (Not two different pronunciations; I'm confused about the last syllable thing)
Posh: [zɛd.biː.ˈbiː.ə]
Vulgar: [zɛbːʊ̈.ˈbɪə̯]
I don't bother mentalising it normally, and have never actually said it.

I alternate depending on which sounds better. here zedbibi is harder to pronounce..

I say kʰɑɫɪfɫɑəɹ where the downglide on the "r" is inescapable so my pronunciation is identical to, say, "cauliflaur"
