[ˌɒ.kʰə.ˈnɜʉ.mə.wɒk] would be my attempt.Travis B. wrote:Okay, now, how do you pronounce Oconomowoc? (Hint, you can pronounce it with either three or four different vowel phonemes, with the careful pronunciation having four.)

Something along the lines of [aˈkʰanəˌmawɛk], I think, or maybe [ʌˈkʰanəˌmawɛk].Travis B. wrote:Okay, now, how do you pronounce Oconomowoc? (Hint, you can pronounce it with either three or four different vowel phonemes, with the careful pronunciation having four.)
I generally forget to say, so if it's relevant and I don't mention it--I'm from Southern Michigan and speak Inland North American English. Yes, I have the Northern Cities Vowel Shift; no, I don't have the cot-caught merger; and it is called pop.

phonemic [fə'nɛ.mɪk]
Arkansas ['ɑɹ.kən.sʌː], but sometimes it's [əɹ'kæn.zɪs] in my head, though I know it's wrong!
Oconomowoc [ə.kə'nʌ.mə.wʌk] would be my guess...

Mine would be [ɵʊ̯kənäməwɒk] (/o:kənɒməwɔ:k/ in very broad transcription). Possibly under influence of economic and/or Okinawa.

Phonetic difference between the /D/s in that and breathe?
They're both /D/ but there's a qualitative difference that I can only describe as being more aspirated in the second one.

i'm tempted to try [Qk@"nQm@wQ:] thru the influence of names like Mackinac and Arkansas ["Ar\kn=sQ:].Travis B. wrote:Okay, now, how do you pronounce Oconomowoc? (Hint, you can pronounce it with either three or four different vowel phonemes, with the careful pronunciation having four.)
(as for Okinawa, [okinawa] .. well alright [QkI"naw@])
phonemic is [f@"nimI?k] - or to make it fit itself, /f@"ni:mIk/
Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Carefully, Oconomowoc is /oʊˈkɑnəməˌwɔːk/ [oˈkʰãːnə̃ːməːˌwɒʔk] and, not carefully, it is /əˈkɑnəməˌwɔːk/ [əˈkʰãːnə̃ːməːˌwɒʔk]*. Note that there is some idiolectal variation, as some will have [ɑ] for /ɔː/ and some will have [oʊ] for /oʊ/.
* I personally tend to reduce this further to [əˈkʰãːːməːˌwɒʔk].

What about diphthong? I pronounced it ['dIfTON], but once I learned there's also a monopthong, it's probably ['dAIfTON]?

It's either ['dɪp.θʌŋ] or ['dɪf.θʌŋ] for me.
flour vs flower?
Any audible difference for you guys?

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Doesn't make a difference, at least not for the standard pronunciation -- with Greek-based words, closed syllables before these types of cross-syllabic clusters ( <p.t>, <x> = /k.s/, <ph.th> etc) have a short vowel as a rule. (E.g. monopteral~dipteral and monoploid~diploid.)jal wrote:What about diphthong? I pronounced it ['dIfTON], but once I learned there's also a monopthong, it's probably ['dAIfTON]?
I have:
['dɪfθɑŋ]
[fl̥aʊɚ]
Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Hm, maybe slightly in careful speech. [flaʊɻ] vs. [flaʊɚ]; in normal speech, though, both would be [flaʊɻ].L'alphabētarium wrote:flour vs flower?

Respectively, in careful speech. In general I probably say both [flæɞ̯ɜ̯], more or less.
