Elcarin y
Elcarin y
Isaw a few elcarin words that end in y. How is this pronounced? I looked throug hte grammar and couldn't see anthing that said what it's pronounced like.
Z covered that one in a post way back in the prehistory of the Elkaril discussion--"ly" is a palatal l, like that in Russian (pronounce it with your tongue up against the roof of your mouth, as if you were going to follow it with a "y"-sound. Or, as one of my old TAs explained Russian palatization, say it as if you has a piece of chewing gum stuck behind your front teeth, so your tongue can't get that far forward
).
That's the only final "y" I know about for sure; I think any others operate the same way--by palatalizing the consonant before it.
