Leaning on someone :> being in their favor (and being accepted by them) :> being fond of them :> affection.

I often feel that I should have many other derivations like this. If you look at etymologies, the semantic history of a word is often very circuitous!

Oh, I was thinking of "against" and "inclination" in their figurative meanings. I wondered how going against one's inclination could come to mean affection. Not that that's unthinkable, but it didn't seem very typical of Cadhinorian culture.

Ah, looking closer, I see that there's a thinko there. Polege means 'position', not 'inclination', which is the meaning of the entire compound.
