How do the Aleman fonts work?

Questions or discussions about Almea or Verduria-- also the Incatena. Also good for postings in Almean languages.

How do the Aleman fonts work?

Post by vec »

I've been trying to download all the fonts to display zompist.com right but they all seem to be damaged or somthing, when I get them. How do I do this right?

First, you don't need to download the Almean fonts to display zompist.com. If you're seeing odd characters, what you need is a Unicode font.

Second, the only problem I'm aware of is that older versions of Netscape don't download the font files correctly. If that's what's happening, use IE.

Not a bad idea. Fonts on my page.

Only if people want to download the fonts.

Perhaps using imbedded fonts, even though I'm not sure which explorers support them...

Yeah, but they're a pain to install (and I think they may need FTP access) :( . You could use images (since almost all browsers support them), except they eat up bandwidth. Quickly.

Not really. It's just a snippet of code. But yea, not many sites offer FTP access, especially pop-up-hosters like Angelfire, Tripod, and Geocities (who also hate outside linking of images for they eat up bandwidth excessively). I'm being hosted by my friend, so I guess I'm in the lucky.

But don't you have to convert the font into OTF format?

What are imbedded fonts when they're at home? (and how would I go about using them?)

At home? What?

Anyway, embedded fonts are special font files stored on a website that lets anyone see them, whether or not they have the font installed.

I think you can now imbed TTF online, as one can preload an image. I'll have to check...

I still am wondering what the code snippet is, but I've heard that imbedded fonts take a while to load. My solution was to offer a romanized alternative to using the font. Images are good for section headers and such.

You have to use style sheets...ick...

Embedded fonts are a tricky alternative to using pictures, since you can assign a cursive string to a character like, "F." If you only use less than 10 characters, perhaps IPA, the entire file should be around 60 kb, as apposed to the true type fonts' 300 kb size.

No, it's a terrible, terrible, horribly bad idea. Unless, of course, you're not particularly interested in traffic for your website. If it's just for yourself and a few others, then, maybe, it's a decent idea.

But if you actually want anyone to look at your website, universal format and ease of use should be among your absolute highest design goals. Use the most universal formats (fonts being a kind of format for these purposes) you can get your hands on, and absolutely Do Not require that you're readers download a font of (to them) unknown quality, then install it, and only then be able to look at your website. Your traffic will die a thousand horrible, screaming deaths.

At home? What?
Asking what something's called when it's at home is a way of asking for a simple description. To me, it's an archaism, I don't know if it might be in usage in some dialect. The idea is, what are they called when they're at home? = what is the more familiar name?

Ick. Style sheets are demanding little things. Thankfully, IE doesn't care what's in them as long as it can read them. Which sucks, because when making a webpage and only testing it on IE, you don't know if it works or not. A simple missing comma, not specifying a 'Font-family,' can cause other browsers to go crazy and completely ignore the information.

I would say: ick, IE. Seems to me at least half of the problem that your complaining about is the fact that IE is not standards-compliant. And in fact is intentionally desgined to be non-standard, for nefarious purposes.

I know, IE is really nasty :(

Aidan, I wouldn't say it's an archaism: I don't say it, but I wouldn't be suprised if someone else said it.

Opera: http://www.opera.com

The free version is exactly the same as the pay one, except a small add in the corner.
