Questions or discussions about Almea or Verduria-- also the Incatena. Also good for postings in Almean languages.

Nothing easier. I've been thinking about Dhekhnam too and I've realised that from the point of view of a ktuvok (who is the biggest snob you can imagine) it's a good thing to have wealthy and powerful vassals in your chrem. A rich ktuvok is a rival, but a rich human loyal to you is an asset. His wealth is technically yours, while remaining his at the same time (there is a net increase in virtual wealth). What's more he boosts your reputation and may well get you a mate. You will boast of him to females ("Oh by the way, did I tell you my Philoplutos owns a house in the most fashionable district of Demoshimor, forty acres of game preserve and a five-mile stretch of river?") So a ktuvok does not suppress his most powerful servants, he positively showers them with favour. They will not rebel against him. They couldn't possibly be better off without him.

(He probably does have to worry about them being poached by his rivals. However he can take steps to prevent that.)

Consequently Gelalhat is the only religion which has no qualms whatever about wealth. The end justifies the means and the end is to become filthy rich.

This is also why the educated, cosmopolitan and resourceful Demoshi became favoured over the backward Tyellakh although the Tyellakh joined Dhekhnam first.

To be sure it is very bad luck if you happen to be born outside the upper classes. You are in danger of being cruelly exploited and oppressed by (human) superiors who have no mitigating scruples, and who do secretly fear you will rebel.
zompist wrote:Mornche, your point is spot on about ktuvoks considering that their humans' wealth is non-threatening, since they consider it theirs.
Bringing up the pope... to be honest, I can't see much of a difference between ktuvoks and the medieval European aristocracy. (Imagine if the Hapsburgs were ktuvoks?)

I suspect that more often than not, the will of the ktuvoks turns out to be what the priest himself happens to want.

When I read George Orwell's essay "Such, such were the joys" it struck me that his old school was a lot like a ktuvok empire. Nearly all the elements were there; the caste system, the snobbery, the deference to Sambo and Flip. Even ktuvok mesmerism had a sort of parallel: Orwell accepted the rotten value system found there and genuinely believed, for example, that you were no good unless you had £100'000.

As I've gotten tired of the "languages of nasty people sound Germanic" meme, Dhekhnami is being revamped to sound pleasant.
Just another note of comparison... the bogeymen of Europe for 1000 years, the Turks, speak in my opinion a quite mellifluous language.

That’s why they were so dangerous.

Thread revival...
We:dei and Kebreni, maybe? Assuming Elkaril and Flaidish aren't related to any human languages, that's all I can think of...
AHA! Kebreni and Old Skourene...they both rely on a hell of a lot of non-concatenative morphology...
(goes off to do some toil-filled comparative method on Old Skourene and Kebreni)

And is it going to kill someone just to say "Yes" or "No"?

I don't think so.

No, it wouldn't; but this is where you learn that most people aren't going to just give you information about things. It's called 'having better things to do'. Welcome to the real world.

 Look I don't want to start anything so I'll just say this, I see no harm in asking what I asked so I don't know why I would have look it up myself when someone could just tell me. I don't have to look everything up. And asking someone is in a way a shortcut when you either don't have time to look it up yourself or just don't feel like it.

But one things for sure how would we learn anything if we didn't ask questions? Sometimes you need to ask questions because you can't look everything up. And plus you might not get exactly what you're looking for so I think asking questions is a very reasonable thing to do. If you don't like it then oh well.

That's your problem. But you don't have to be rude about it. If I were to look it up I assume the answer would be in the Almeopedia right? Well I just did and it said nothing about the writing systems of any of the 3 languages ( because info on only 1 is available ). So you see why I had to ask?

Plus I just had a feeling that there wasn't much on the languages yet including said pretty scripties. So please.

Now, I'll ask this again:

Do any of the languages have scripts?

Listen to Blackhand and Pthug rather than just making retorts and justifying your actions to yourself. I might not agree with their tone, but I do agree with their message, viz. sometimes you need to do things for yourself and not rely on just making a post / jumping in people's faces (or getting the boingies to do so). For a good model, look at FinalZero's signature.

Since I'm here, I'll answer your question. Demoshi and some other languages spoken in Dhekhnam, such as Sarroc, and presumably some of the other Eynleyni languages, are written with the Demoshi (aka Dhekhnami) alphabet; use of the Cađinorian alphabet is restricted in Dhekhnam. Originally the Demoshis used adapted forms of the Cađinorian alphabet, but the modern script is a reformed alphabet created by the merchants' guild of Ornâkh in the 26th century. It draws heavily on the Jippirasti alphabet, from which (presumably) it draws the idea of letters for consonant clusters such as shk ks nd. As for numbers, Zompist writes that they are "based on traditional Munkhâshi tally marks."

All of that information was on two pages - mostly the Atlas, and also the Sarroc page in the Almeopedia (see links). I didn't have to look very hard for those - and if I can do it, you can too! :D
