If there is only one other kitchen, I would agree. However, dormitories tend to have more than two kitchens. (Tendency only, mine had only two, for a 1000 friggn' students.)

The dorms at the University of Dayton only have 1 or 0 "kitchens" (Actually dining halls) per dorm. Unless you're lucky enough to be in Marycrest (1st and 2nd year) or VWK (2nd year) you're going to have to walk to one that does have one, as those are the only 2 that do have one. (or go to KU, or go out to eat, or order pizza, or eat something that doesn't need to be cooked, etc.) Marianist does have a sort of restaurant thing, though I think it's pretty limited.

Edit: I think VWK might have normal kitchen-type areas, but I'm not sure, I've never checked, as I've never lived there.

It's a very small block, twenty students. Three kitchens, but only two of them have tables and chairs. "(The) other kitchen" refers to the other kitchen with chairs. Mystery solved. :p

I never had any idea where I was the whole time I was there. The grid system switched off my European navigation system; it all looked the same to me, and I found that disconcerting. I need erratic geography to find my way around as it provides a reference point. I was so lost the whole time in NY. Luckily, one of the people I asked for directions was also walking the wrong way, so we rescued one another.

Also, the NY subway can suck my balls. Ten million lines, none of which appear to intercept one another until you get to Fulton. What you people need is a circle line! None of this walking an extra five blocks to get the right train business. Also, money should be different sizes so you can identify it when you are drunk. Had a fantastic time there, though.

You largely can go around without having to pay again at least, but, I agree, we need a train that runs the entire city. Also, what's the fare like? They hiked it right after I left, so, I dunno. T^T Though, I think the grid system is perfect, I always get lost here because things aren't built on a grid. >.<

Just a name I took ages ago, the first two kanji read Tanaka, which is a common surname & the last two Ryuuji. And yeah, for most of my time here I've been moko.

I like the concept of different prices based on distance. But, I think the MTA one fare system is the most efficient, though, I don't wanna pay 2.50. Most people just get unlimited rides though. I know I bought one every month before I left.

You could just have a deductible card that automatically subtracts the appropriate fare from your balance.

As for efficiency, it might be efficient for the user, but for the company, they are actually loosing money. If you have a flat rate, those who travel less are actually subsidizing those who travel more. While there is a good part there (travelling less might mean you can afford a more expensive house closer to transportation hubs), it can get to the ridiculous level where you can travel 3 hours vs. 10 minutes and be the same price. And for your transporter, it is cheaper to transport (1) many people (2) over short distances (3) in a minimum of time (4) using high capacity and (5) segregated infrastructures, which is better if you can concentrate people. And with differential rates, it gets easier to concentrate them.

You should tell that to the MTA, who're making profits yet not improving service and still raising fares. >.> And that theory is offset by the amount of users of a system, I could see in a smaller city like say, LA, especially when more people are using cars, but, in a city like New York where most of the population travels using mass-transit there is value and profit. Even if they only travel 10 minutes away, they use the subway system more often than not.

Have you checked the insane amount of subsidies? They are making profits over subsidies (that's what I can see from their budget). For all liberal/socialist/whateverleftist I am, making profits over subsidies is insane, and depending on subsidies is not a good thing, especially for a business that, historically, was profitable (and still can be).

The amount of users is determined by many factors, and not only city size. Montreal is five times smaller than New York, but the system transports only half that of New York (if the numbers I saw for NYC are right). Transit is easier with density. New York is a really dense city in the US, nothing comparable elsewhere really. People use cars when density is low, because public transit (no matter what) cannot be as convenient there.

Well, that's why you build cities up. I cannot, for the life of me understand why people would build outward and make things less convenient for themselves. But yeah, I agree with the notion of distance based fare, but, think, for a system like the MTA, for now at least, the unified-fare system is the best and most efficient way to go.
