wikipedia says Octopūs (-odis m.), but thats just the genitive.
edit: aha, I found octopodēs on wiktionary. It also says that the Swedish word for octopus is bläckfisk, which means "ink fish" and forms its plural just like the normal word for fish.

Heh, German Tintenfische are cuttlefish/squid/sometimes octowhatevs.

Oh? I would have expected, well, podes, the most probable and regular way of pronouncing it, judging from the spelling (I'm not sure of the IPA/SAMPA, but ["p_h@_Udz], I guess?). Just like nodes and odes and whatever.

I heard my friend pronouncing it ["Okt@p_h@Udz], or something like that, but definitely with a diphthong... Anyway, the one in the Merriam-Webster video jal posted here pronounced it [Ok"tOp@diz] (approximately). So I was wondering how people would pronounce it.

Oh god, we truly are nerdy. My first instinct was "why didn't he just use sunt and have it all in Latin?".

that is actually how bricka has marked it, just marking that phoneme as /o/. it makes a lot more sense, especially considering the scottish accent, but it can be difficult to remember that that's what one means when few other people actually use that usage...

Sigh... I posted a video to someone pronouncing it. Is it so hard to like, check what people post...
The friendly Merriam Webster editor pronounces it /Vk."tV.p@.di:s/ or the like, stressing the second and antepenultimate syllable.

Yes, and since the pronunciation there was different than the one I had heard before, I asked for confirmation here. And I referred to your video. So you are the one who doesn't check what people post. I wanted to see how other people pronounced it.

No, you said "Hey, how would you pronounce "octopodes"?", which is not "referring to the video". But nevermind and appplogies, I must've been a bit grumpy.

But this is just because I'm the kind of person that has to win arguments. So apologies on this side as well.
