Perhaps each nation could have their own idea of that.

So, we can't just go with "Age of Sail"?
EDIT: Oh, and when we get to making languages, I think we need to find a list of nautical terms.

Are we going with a Proto-Istio or is each person going to make up his or her own protolanguage(s)?Ollock wrote:Oh, and when we get to making languages, I think we need to find a list of nautical terms.

With the level of advancement as it is, and the spread of all the islands, probably each person comes up with their own language would be best.Rorschach wrote:Are we going with a Proto-Istio or is each person going to make up his or her own protolanguage(s)?Ollock wrote:Oh, and when we get to making languages, I think we need to find a list of nautical terms.

Are you freaking kidding me? This world is filled with islands! Assuming a reconstructible Proto-World for this, after humans have clearly spread all over the world, would be ludicrous! Every little archipelago should have at least one family pretty much to itself.Rorschach wrote:Are we going with a Proto-Istio or is each person going to make up his or her own protolanguage(s)?Ollock wrote:Oh, and when we get to making languages, I think we need to find a list of nautical terms.

Wiktionary has a whole section for nautical terms; http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:en:Nautical
That's far more than we'll probably ever need, but this website has a more 'summarized' list: http://phrontistery.info/nautical.html
EDIT: Should I start working on my language now while we're in planning? It would be nice to already have a basic idea of it so early.

I can't believe it!
I take my eyes off that thing for less than 24 hours and it's already having a map and people claiming land?!
I've lost count with all these 3 pages of news in the past few hours (
) which islands are free to claim and how are we going so far?

Thanks. Yeah, remember that we only have up to sail technology. Anything beyond that we don't need terms for.Theta wrote:Wiktionary has a whole section for nautical terms; http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:en:Nautical

There are a lot of things that are conspicuously unlikely for this planed. Like, how the Hell do we get enough wood to build freaking sailing vessels. Maybe we should have extra-thick bamboo on this world -- so we have a fast-replenishing wood-like resource.cromulant wrote:I only asked because it looks conspicuously unlikely for humans to evolve on this planet.Astraios wrote:I thought we weren't bothering with that stuff.cromulant wrote:Questions.

Looks like consensus is growing for Istio for the name, but if anybody has any other ideas or objections, don't hesitate to make them.
I can set up a wiki sometime later today if everybody doesn't mind.

I guess that's why some light-to-moderate Rule of Cool and/or handwaving has to take place here. On a similar vein, I suggested earlier that maybe some concultures have air machines in the first place - balloons, maybe? - that would maybe require less wood than big ships. Or not.Ollock wrote:There are a lot of things that are conspicuously unlikely for this planed. Like, how the Hell do we get enough wood to build freaking sailing vessels. As for the name "Istio" (Ιστίο) is the Modern Greek name for "sail", while "Istion" (Ιστίον) is the Ancient/Byzantine Greek name for it. I think Istion sounds even better!
Re: The Age of Sail - a collab conworld sprouting
On the previous page Rorschach posted a map with all of the current claims circled. There's a lot of land taken but there's also plenty open.

Would it be fair to say that from a geophysical and climatological standpoint, my claim is basically Iceland sans volcanoes?

Hey, that sounds cool!Astraios wrote:Want to share? We could have two peoples that are allied as one nation or something.L'alphabētarium wrote:@Astraios - You took my best choice!
We could expand to certain free western and southern islands and have our people share the two main big ones in the western half of your area. Kinda like Hispaniola or New Guinea are cut in half compromising two allied countries. Could that work?
(Now if only I could figure out a way to repost that damn map! How do you do it?
Re: The Age of Sail - a collab conworld sprouting
It's not ludicrous, if the spread of humanity to the far corners of Istio was anything like the Austronesian expansion--relatively recent (starting c. 5000 BC), from a small area (Taiwan) into a huge area (from the Eastern Pacific to the Western Indian).Ollock wrote:Are you freaking kidding me?
