Re: Romanization challenge thread

Post by WeepingElf »

Let me try it myself. I want something practical and readable, and easy to type.

Consonants

/p t s t͡ɬ k/ p t s tl k
/m͡b n͡d n͡z n͡ɮ ŋ͡g/ mb nd nz nl ng [1]
/| ! ||/ t' c' l'
/ⁿ| ⁿ! ⁿ||/ nt' nc' nl' [1]

[1] The m/n is omitted when following another consonant (which must also be nasalized).

Vowels

/i e æ o u/ (+ATR) i e a o u
/ɪ ɛ ɑ ɔ ʊ/ (-ATR) i e a o u, first vowel in the word followed by h

Tones

/æ˥ æ˧ æ˩/ á a à

Sample text

/tæ˥!i˩ !ɛ˧kt͡ɬɪ˩ n͡ɮo˥tki˩s ||e˥n͡zⁿ|i˧/
tác'ì c'ehktlì nlótkìs l'énzt'i

Looks like I have found something to use in my own notes.

An unnamed protolang:

/m̥ m n̥ n ɲ̥ ɲ ŋ̥ ŋ ŋʷ̥ ŋʷ/
/ᵐb ᵐɓ ⁿd ⁿɗ ⁿd͡ʑ ⁿɗ̱ʲ ᵑg ᵑgʷ/
/p b ɓ t d ɗ t͡ɕ d͡ʑ ɗ̱ʲ k g kʷ gʷ ʔ/
/f s ɕ x xʷ/
/ʋ ɹ j w/
/i u e o æ a/

Syllables are maximally CVC. Prenasalized stops lose prenasalization after obstruents. Nasals assimilate to following obstruents in POA.

Example sentence:

/ʋeʋti ᵐbipæ ii kʷe æt͡ɕu uɗ̱ʲuŋ̥ n̥o ŋ̥eɲ̥t͡ɕuj iɹ xoⁿd͡ʑ xus ŋʷ̥eoɹ geʋ kʷiɲ̥e ji uxe isa uᵑgixʷ teʔe jim̥pæ æt͡ɕu o ŋ̥ikn̥iɗ̱ʲ saæ uxe ketŋe e eɲæ ⁿɗan̥ti iju tin̥uw ɕewiⁿɗ̱ʲ od͡ʑeʋ mi ᵐɓuᵑgʷ ii faɹ ɕus/

The phonological inventory of a yet unnamed conlang inspired by Northwest Caucasian languages.
(For an extra challenge, use very few or no diacritics / special symbols and keep polygraphs as short as possible and within common sense. I’ll show my own version later, but it isn't pretty...)

/p t tʷ k kʷ q qʷ ʔ ʔʷ/
/b d dʷ ɡ ɡʷ/
/pʼ tʼ tʷʼ kʼ kʷʼ qʼ qʷʼ/
/t͡s t͡sʷ t͡ʃ ʈ͡ʂ ʈ͡ʂʷ/
/d͡z d͡zʷ d͡ʒ ɖ͡ʐ ɖ͡ʐʷ/
/t͡sʼ t͡sʷʼ t͡ʃʼ ʈ͡ʂʼ ʈ͡ʂʷʼ/
/f s sʷ ɬ ɬʷ ʃ ʂ ʂʷ x xʷ χ χʷ h hʷ/
/v z zʷ ɮ ɮʷ ʒ ʐ ʐʷ ɣ ɣʷ ʁ ʁʷ/
/m n nʷ/
/l lʷ j w/
/ɾ ɾʷ/
/ɨ ə a/

Without going into details, vowels become rounded in contact with tautosyllabic labialized consonants, and fronted in contact with tautosyllabic /j/ and palato-alveolars. But allophony doesn’t have to be reflected in the romanization anyway.

The first example sentence is very artificial, since I tried to use as many different consonants as possible. The second one is slightly less contrived:

That was fast, thanks! Nort's romanization is compact and logical, but I have a deep rooted habit of avoiding diacritics (or at least having an alternative spelling without diacritics). Anyway, you've given me some ideas, but this was my original romanization (Warning: ugly polygraphs ahead!):

/p t tʷ k kʷ q qʷ ʔ ʔʷ/ <p t tw k kw q qw c cw> (youv'e assumed right, no vowel-initial words, so word-initial /ʔ/ is left unwritten)
/b d dʷ ɡ ɡʷ/ <b d dw g gw>
/pʼ tʼ tʷʼ kʼ kʷʼ qʼ qʷʼ/ <p' t' tw' k' kw' q' qw'>
/t͡s t͡sʷ t͡ʃ ʈ͡ʂ ʈ͡ʂʷ/ <ts tsw txy tx txw>
/d͡z d͡zʷ d͡ʒ ɖ͡ʐ ɖ͡ʐʷ/ <dz dzw djy dj djw>
/t͡sʼ t͡sʷʼ t͡ʃʼ ʈ͡ʂʼ ʈ͡ʂʷʼ/ <ts' tsw' txy' tx' txw'>
/f s sʷ ɬ ɬʷ ʃ ʂ ʂʷ x xʷ χ χʷ h hʷ/ <f s sw sl slw xy x xw kh khw qh qhw h hw>
/v z zʷ ɮ ɮʷ ʒ ʐ ʐʷ ɣ ɣʷ ʁ ʁʷ/ <v z zw zl zlw jy j jw gh ghw rh rhw>
/m n nʷ/ <m n nw>
/l lʷ j w/ <l lw y w>
/ɾ ɾʷ/ <r rw>
/ɨ ə a/ <i e a>
/ə a/ (unstressed) <u o> (yes, I know...); unstressed /ɨ/ rarely occurs except in compounds and some final particles

I was aiming to represent secondary articulation more on the vowels to avoid overuse of <w>, but I got a bit stuck on how to handle /ɨ/ around palatals, so I ended up using more diacritics than I'd liked...
