Help your fluency in a nifty way
Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
My boyfriend lives about 85 km away (i know, far). Originally it was his idea but finally this week I went there by bike. I got back at about 4:30 this afternoon, and i'm so tired (i already slept a bit). In total it took about seven hours. But also, on thursday when I went there, it was so windy, it was fucking awful. Pas encore en Allemagne.
Nog niet in Duitsland.
Not yet in Germany.

Here not either. I assume that each Bundesland has its own holiday schedule? In the Netherlands we have three regions, each with its own schedule. De first region having holiday this year is region Middle, which starts at 11 June.

Zo vroeg?
So early? The first German states start on June, 23rd. And yes, each state has their own schedule, but they agree the schedules in a conference of the Kultusminister (education Ministers).
Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
*"aanvangen" is a Dutch verb, but has limited use (at least in ND), as opposed to "beginnen", which is broadly used.hwhatting wrote:Zo vroeg? De eerste Duitse deelstaten beginnen* opde23 juniaan. **I think "bijeenkomst" is better in this case. A "conferentie" is typically open to everyone interested, and has speakers and an audience etc.
***I'd move it to the front, "ze spreken hun schema's af op een bijeenkomst van ...". Sounds less stilted.
Nein, nicht so früh. Ich hatte "Juli" statt "Juni" gemeint.
No, not that early. I meant "July" instead of "June".

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
Thanks! The meeting is called Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK), that's why I chose that word. In any case, a quick googling seems to show that Dutch can apply conferentie to closed / institutionalised meetings of politicians, like the KMK is?jal wrote:**I think "bijeenkomst" is better in this case. Ceci n'est pas une traduction.
This is not a translation.
Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
Yes, it can, but like I said, it's not typically used that way. I think it's semantically shifting.hwhatting wrote:In any case, a quick googling seems to show that Dutch can apply conferentie to closed / institutionalised meetings of politicians, like the KMK is?

I'm here. I haven't been writing anything even though I always see what everybody else wrote here because it takes time to correct mistakes in the languages I essentially know. I've been pretty busy lately since first I had to go for jury duty, then I went to California to see my brother. After that, everybody over there came here with me, and whenever I got time here, I tried to type out a little of my grandfather's diary. Fortunately, I'm almost done reading it. There's only 15 pages left. I'm going to type it all out.

I don't think it exists in Polish. It's rather in one form "przeminęło z wiatrem", but I can always be wrong.

There isn't really an equivalent to this in German AFAIK. I think you'd have to say something like "ich auch" instead.Frislander wrote:Gleich hier.

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
I don't think there's a good translation for "gone with the wind" in Dutch (is there in German?). "Verwaaid" means "looking scruffy as a result of being caught in a strong wind" or the like. "Weggewaaid" means "to be blown away", which I guess is what you meant.hwhatting wrote:Weggewaaid door de wind.

Ja. Op Duits zeggen wij vom Winde verweht, dus verwaaien was een valse vriend.jal wrote:I don't think there's a good translation for "gone with the wind" in Dutch (is there in German?). Yes. In German it's vom Winde verweht, so verwaaien was a false friend.

Ah, right, that explains. There are many false freinds between Dutch and German :).

So the translation "Gejaagd door de wind" is no good?
Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
Well, first, it's a 1937 translation, so who knows what "gejaagd" meant then :). But in currentday Dutch, "gejaagd door de wind" doesn't make much sense. "Opgejaagd door de wind" could make some sense, but is still strange idiomatically.Vijay wrote:So the translation "Gejaagd door de wind" is no good?
